ADK Fidelis Gamma Chapter accepts slate of officers
WEIRTON -- The West Virginia Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Women Educators Organization met March 3 at Garden Grill Steakhouse in Weirton.
President Diane Higgins opened the meeting with a welcome to the members. Chaplain Bonnie Queses gave the "Thought for the Day," sharing a poem entitled "Heaven's Grocery Store."
Queses read the November and December minutes, and Higgins gave the treasurer's report. Members were reminded that dues and birthday money should be paid by Dec. 1.
Altruistic Chairman Margo Polk noted that service hours, monetary donations and nonmonetary donations were reported to the state. Fraternity Education Chairman Liz Pugh presented and educational bingo game on the facts of AKD. The ADK scholarship will be presented this spring.
Higgins delivered the completed scrapbook.
Nominating Chairman Jerry DeFilippo introduced the slate of officers for the 2022-24 biennium. They are president, Diane Higgins; president-elect, Margo Polk; secretary, Sandy Anderson; corresponding secretary, Susan Cullinan; financial, Carolyn Allison; and chaplain, Bonnie Queses. A motion was made and accepted by the membership
Membership Chairman Jerry DeFilippo presented a list of prospective members, who were accepted.
Higgins provided background information on C.H.E.A.R., a World Understanding Project challenge which embraces cultural differences. A donation was sent from the chapter.
Special dates for members to remember included the West Virginia state convention on April 22-24 at the Charleston Marriott and the Southeast Region Conference in July in Wilmington, N.C.
Cullinan discussed the situation in Ukraine and asked the members to consider giving donations to the Red Cross and the Catholic Fund.
March birthdays were acknowledged.
Hostesses for the meeting were Cullinan and Higgins. The next meeting will be April 7 with Polk and Donna Roman serving as hostesses.
Holy Trinity Philoptochos
selling Easter bread, cookies
STEUBENVILLE -- The Ladies Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, located at 300 S. Fourth St., Steubenville, is baking sweet bread for Easter.
The group also will be selling koulourakia, twist cookies. The bread is $9 a loaf, and the cookies are $7 a dozen. The bread must be pre-ordered, and all orders need to be placed by April 3.
The pickup for the bread and cookies will be on April 13 and April 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To order, call Marianne Balakos at (740) 264-2462. Orders will be limited to 400 loaves.

De-He-Wa-Mis Questers hear program on painted furniture
WINTERSVILLE -- After a winter break, the De-He-Wa-Mis Questers met at the home of Shelley Zatta for the March meeting. Zatta presented a program on pre-1900 painted furniture, sharing her extensive knowledge on the furniture construction and finishes from that era.
A luncheon was served by Zatta and Tammy Cain, co-host.
President Mary Jane Ighnat conducted the business meeting with reports given by Linda Kovach and Zatta. A thank-you note regarding a recent donation fo the Beatty Park project was read. Members voted on the international and state slate of officers. Changes to the international bylaws were discussed.
A letter from the Ohio Questers state President Jennifer Lyons was read regarding the upcoming spring conference, which will be held April 7-8 in Olmstead Falls, Ohio. Kovach will prepare the annual summary to be presented there.
Kathy Duco was a guest at the meeting.
The April meeting will be held at Iggy's Restaurant in Toronto. Jodee Verhovec and Debbie Sustik will serve as hostesses.
Original play to be performed Friday and Saturday at school
WINTERSVILLE -- Pastor, playwright and director Gary C. Lilly of Restoration Church wrote an original script entitled "Such a Great Cloud of Witnesses" which will be preformed by the students of Jefferson County Christian School this week.
The performances will be given on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.

WHEELING -- On March 26 at 11 a.m., inside the historic court room at West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling, the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will host speaker Thomas Hazlett.
Hazlett's lecture employs his vocational and avocational skills to discuss the treason trial, and Wheeling's potential role, of Jefferson Davis, who served as the president of the Confederacy from 1861-1865.
Topics for future roundtable presentations will include: John Brown; Battle of Fort Sumter; Letters in the Attic; Civil War Pittsburgh; and Hudson and Kent, Ohio.
The lectures are open to the public and free of charge. Donations to the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will be accepted.
Registration under way for
April prostate screenings
STEUBENVILLE -- As part of Minority Health Month, there will be a men's free prostate screening on April 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Tony Teramana Cancer Center, 3204 Johnson Road, Steubenville.
The screening is free and open to the public.
Registration is under way for men ages 40 and older. The deadline to register is April 19 by contacting Barb Steitz, patient navigator, at the Tony Teramana Cancer Center, at (740) 264-8207. The number provided in a story in Sunday's Valley Life section was incorrect.
The event is done by the Neighborhood Community Development Center of Urban Mission Ministries in partnership with Women In Action Against Cancer Coalition of Jefferson County.
Giveaway of personal hygiene items set at Weirton church
WEIRTON -- Outreach Committee Chair Cathie Yeager and Beth Younciak of First Christian Church, located at 3252 Main St., Weirton, announce that the giveaway of personal hygiene items will be conducted at the church from 11 a.m. to noon on March 31.
The distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Special Olympians to play first
responders in basketball game
WEIRTON -- Hancock County Special Olympians will play Weirton firefighters and emergency medical personnel in a benefit basketball game April 9 at Weirton Elementary School.
Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., with the game to start at 2 p.m. Admission is a donation of the attendee's choice. Food will be sold, and there will be a 50-50 drawing.

to screen 'The Public' March 25
FOLLANSBEE -- The Follansbee Branch Library will show the film, "The Public," at noon March 25.
