Wellsburg Applefest committee taking scholarship applications

WELLSBURG -- The Wellsburg Applefest Committee is accepting applications through May 5 for two scholarships it will be awarding to a male and female Brooke County high school graduate living in Brooke County.

The applicants may be home-schooled or attending any public or private school but must be Brooke County residents with a grade point average of 2.5 or better.

To be presented in May, the $500 scholarships may be used to attend a college, university, trade school or online credited classes.

Applicants should submit their name, address, e-mail address, preferred contact number, the names of civic organizations in which they have been involved and an essay of at least 250 words describing their volunteer efforts and how those have affected their community or organization.

The essay and information should be sent to: Wellsburg Applefest Committee, P.O. Box 108, Wellsburg, WV 26070.

Toronto Seniors to consider

nominations for officers

TORONTO -- Judy Bickler opened the Thursday meeting of the Toronto Seniors.

A nominating committee for new officers for the group will include Karen Krause, Lola Swanagan, Arlene Obertance and Maryln Izzy contacting members to serve as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.

Minutes of the officers meeting on April 5 were read by Joyce Zimmerman and approved. Reports were given by the social secretary on birthdays and anniversaries for the month. A treasurer's report was given.

By majority vote, the group elected to have Connie's Corner provide its meals.

Richard Dobbs won the 50/50 drawing, and Sheryl Boyd, Dan Ciotti and George Uselton won the door prizes. Arlene Obertance won the big basket. Bingo winners were Emma Spicer, Irma Straka, Arlene Obertance and Laura Van Dyke.

Zimmerman led the members in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Trips announced included May 25-27 to Seneca Niagara Falls Resort and Casino and Aug. 12 to Tulka's Polynesian Island Magic Hawaiian Show in Columbiana. Anyone interested in information can contact Bickler at (740) 282-6721 or Carole Eddy at (740) 282-6887.

Veterans Park dinner-dance tickets available for purchase

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Veterans Memorial Park Dinner-Dance will return May 7 at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall.

The Brooke County Veteran of the Year will be recognized, and Easy Street will provide music.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., with dinner by the staff of St. Francis Centre at 7 p.m. and music from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. There will be door prizes and a 50-50 drawing.

Tickets are $35 each and can be purchased at the Brooke Hills Park clubhouse or by calling (304) 737-1256, 737-2295 or 737-7208.

Wellsburg Town Square to be site of Day of Prayer service

WELLSBURG -- The Wellsburg Kiwanis Club and mayor's office will present a service at noon May 5 at the Wellsburg Town Square in observation of National Day of Prayer.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. Sharon Watkins, minister at Bethany Memorial Church and former general minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as well as author of "Whole: A Call to Unity in Our Fragmented World."

The Kiwanis Club will provide a free lunch.

Steubenville Saddle Club

scheduled to meet May 3

STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville Saddle Club will meet at 7 p.m. May 3 at the club grounds, located at 8675 state Route 152 N., Richmond.

Business will include finalizing plans for the start of the club's 2022 show season, which comes during the organization's 75th anniversary year. The opener is May 8 with other shows scheduled for June 19, July 17 and Sept. 11. Shows are open to the public. There is no admission. A concession stand features a variety of food.

Shows begin at 9 a.m. and end after contest classes that will not begin before 3 p.m.

Senior fitness classes being

offered at Brooke library

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library is offering Geri-Fit, a 45-minute strength training class for older adults.

Participants start lifting light weights, usually while seated and can work at their own pace. They should bring a set of light dumbbells, a stretch band and water to drink.

The video fitness classes are held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Follansbee Library, 844 Main St., and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at the Brooke County Library, 945 Main St. Those interested in participating in the free classes should register by calling (304) 737-1551 extension 106.
