Foster parent training offered
during Foster Care Month
STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Department of Job and Family Services, Children Services Division, will offer pre-placement training sessions for people interested in becoming foster parents or foster-to-adopt parents.
The first half of pre-placement sessions will begin Friday and continue through the weekend. The remaining sessions will continue May 20 and end May 22. The classes will be held at the Job and Family Services building located at 125 S. Fifth St., Steubenville.
Training sessions are offered at no cost to the public, and there is no obligation. The agency encourages people who may have an interest in the program to attend pre-service to see what it is all about. Foster homes are needed for children of all ages, from birth to age 18.

Free Lunch and Learn planned
for May 27 at Main Library
STEUBENVILLE -- Find out how to search businesses, jobs and people using the public library's new e-resource during a free Lunch and Learn set for May 27 at 11:30 a.m. at the Main Library of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
Lunch and Learn AtoZdatabases is a program in partnership with the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce to reach businesses and organizations to teach them how to use the online resource. AtoZdatabases is a directory and marketing tool ideal for sales leads, mailing lists, employment opportunities and market research.
"We are so fortunate to have the library system in our community," commented Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kate Sedgmer. "Their ability to provide these types of resources to entrepreneurs in our area -- at no cost -- is just one of the many ways our community is pulling together to support local businesses. Please join us for the event to see how AtoZdatabases can be used to benefit your business," she encouraged.
"The e-resource includes business and executive profiles, access to new movers and new homeowners," explained Public Relations Coordinator Jenn Cesta. "We're excited about this new digital resource at the library. It's a great tool on the website that can help businesses and organizations plus it's ideal for students in business and marketing classes."

East Springfield Community Center having dinner Thursday
EAST SPRINGFIELD -- The East Springfield Community Recreation and Service Center will host a fundraiser dinner from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.
The menu will be cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, applesauce, bread, dessert and drink. The cost is $9. Patrons can dine in or get take-out. The phone number is (740) 543-3700.

Hancock retired school

WEIRTON -- The Hancock County Association of Retired School Employees is having a luncheon and meeting at T. Kosciuszko Hall: Home of Giometti Catering, located at 1801 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton Heights, on May 17 at noon.

Low-cost spay and neuter
clinic is taking appointments
STEUBENVILLE -- The Brooke County Animal Welfare League will hold its next low-cost spay and neuter clinic/RASCAL on July 9-10 at the Steubenville American Legion Post 33, located at 808 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.
RASCAL is an acronym for Roaming Animal Sterilization Clinic at Low Cost.
Interested pet owners must call (304) 374-4443 immediately as appointments are limited and required, and there are no walk-ins, a spokesperson emphasized. Appointments are not limited to Brooke County residents.

of flea market on Saturday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Post 10, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, will be holding a flea market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be 20 vendors selling a variety of items.
Sweet Harmonies to perform Sunday at Wintersville church
WINTERSVILLE -- Wintersville Community Chapel will host a southern gospel concert featuring Sweet Harmonies on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.

St. Thomas Episcopal having flea market on May 20-21
WEIRTON -- St. Thomas Episcopal Church is having its annual two-day flea market sale on May 20-21.
The times are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be many items for sale, including clothes, dishes, lawn items and children's items.

Beyond Kids LLC announces
community giveaway Friday
STEUBENVILLE -- A free community giveaway by Beyond Kids LLC will be held Friday beginning at 3 p.m. at the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, located at 1211 Park St.
The giveaway will include hygiene items, clothes for newborn to adults, shoes, toys, books, cleaning supplies, blankets and dried foods. Participants should bring their own bags, and the items are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Beyond Kids LLC, founded by Christa Ward and her daughters, is a nonprofit service to Steubenville, Cleveland and surrounding areas. "This is an effort to help those in need in our communities," a promotional flier notes. "We want to bridge a gap between poverty and education by supplying the basic needs of families." Information on resources available in the area also is provided.

Nominate outstanding older adult for Seniors Hall of Fame
COLUMBUS -- During Older Americans Month in May, the Ohio Department of Aging is requesting nominations of outstanding older adults to induct into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
The hall honors current or longtime Ohio residents age 60 and older who have made and continue to make a lasting impact on their communities, their professions or their vocations. Visit www.aging.ohio.gov/halloffame to nominate an outstanding older Ohioan May 31 to be considered for induction during a ceremony planned for September.
"The theme for Older Americans Month this year is 'Age Your Way,' and the members of the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame embody this," said Ursel J. McElroy, director of the department. "Their accomplishments remind all of us that a person's ability to contribute to their community and beyond is timeless."
Since 1976, 486 outstanding older Ohioans have been inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Past inductees have included business and industry leaders, advocates, community planners, educators, scientists, health care professionals, volunteers, artists, entertainers and athletes.
Inductees are selected from public nominations and are evaluated on the scope and impact of their contributions begun or continued after age 60. They must be native-born Ohioans or have been residents of Ohio for at least 10 years. Posthumous nominations are accepted, provided the date of death is within the last five years and the nominee was age 60 or older at the time of death.
