Brilliant American Legion
to hold open house Friday
BRILLIANT -- The Brilliant American Legion Post 573, located at 210 Market St., Brilliant, will be hosting an open house from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday.
Food and gaming will be available for guests.
"We want to give the public a chance to see what the Brilliant American Legion has to offer members as well as let them know how the Legion as an organization serves veterans and our communities," a spokesperson noted. "The American Legion is so much more than people realize. We hope that the public will take this opportunity to learn about us."
Applications will be available for anyone wishing to become a member. Those interested in membership should bring a copy of their DD214 -- Certificate of Release from Active Duty (veterans) or their parent, spouse or child's DD214 (Auxiliary), or their parent/grandparent's DD214 (Sons of the American Legion.
"Even if you are not a veteran or a family member of a veteran, there are still ways to be part of the American Legion family. Come to the open house and learn how."
House of Prayer Church
acknowledges special mothers
BRILLIANT -- The House of Prayer Church, 2535 township Road 163, Rayland, held a Mother's Day service with special gifts presented to special mothers, a church spokesperson noted.
Honorees were: Sarah Reynard, oldest mother; Mandi Jarman, youngest mother; and Shawna Westfall, mother of the year.
Every mother in attendance was presented with a potted flower to take home with them.
Author to discuss book during virtual program on Thursday
WELLSBURG -- Author Fred Leavitt, a professor at the University of Michigan, will present a virtual talk on his book, "If Ignorance is Bliss, We All Should Be Ecstatic," at noon on Thursday.
In the book, Leavitt suggests that neither direct observation or reasoning can be trusted to know what's true. The author of six books, he will leave time afterward to answer questions.

Grace's Cupboard Food Pantry open to offer help on Thursday
STEUBENVILLE -- Grace's Cupboard Food Pantry will be held on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

SHS Class of 1959 members
having luncheon Wednesday
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville High School Class of 1959 alumni held their monthly luncheon gathering on April 20 with 20 in attendance.
Norina Eroshevich provided the blessing, and a moment of silence was observed for Rita DeSantis Domanico, sister of Deanna Nodianos. A "shout-out" was given for several classmates, including Jerry Barilla, Steubenville's mayor for his continued support and dedication to the city; Paul Brandt for his more than 50 years in the Steubenville Kiwanis Club; Pete Chalfant, for his commitment and support of Urban Mission Ministries; and Pete Barren for keeping the class updated of all progress in the school system as well as fellow classmates.
Tom Maxwell provided some humor and inspiration regarding "dancing in the rain."
The class will celebrate a Memorial Day luncheon on Wednesday at Froehlich's Classic Corner in Steubenville, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Contact Eroshevich at (740) 219-2234 for reservations.
Health fair set for June 11
at Millsop Community Center
WEIRTON -- A "Health Fair for the Upper Ohio Valley" will be held at the Millsop Community Center in Weirton on June 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Multiple screenings will be offered at the event, the theme of which is "Better Informed, Better Health, Better Living."
The health fair sponsored by Morning Star Baptist Church of Weirton will offer individuals and families an opportunity to learn and experience Ohio Valley's many health-related resources and services, a spokesperson noted.
Flea market Friday, Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal
WEIRTON -- St. Thomas Episcopal Church is having its annual two-day flea market sale on Friday and Saturday.
The times are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be many items for sale, including clothes, dishes, lawn items and children's items.
The church is located on Three Springs Drive in Weirton.

Appalachian Antique Power Show scheduled May 28-29
NEW ATHENS -- The second-annual Appalachian Antique Power Show will be held May 28-29 at the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park grounds, located at 43672 Stumptown Road, New Athens, on Ohio 519 between U.S. 22 and New Athens.
The show will feature antique tractors, hit-and-miss engines, oilfield engines and garden tractors.
All agriculture, industrial, military, logging, oil and gas, steam, and transportation machinery and history are welcome along with antique tractors, hit-and-miss engines, oilfield engines, cars, trucks (semi and pickup) and garden tractors.
There will be a swap and flea market area.
The hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 28 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 29. Admission is $5.
