WEIRTON -- The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its luncheon meeting April 9 at Giovanni's Restaurant, Weirton. Regent Vickie Joseph presided at the gathering that included a special speaker and update on the chapter 100th anniversary celebration.

Nancy Valles gave the invocation and led in the American's Creed. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Barbara Starkey.

Registrar Susan Welch introduced prospective members.

The program on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was presented by Dennis McMahon, Society of the Honor Guard No. 320, who was introduced by Joseph. The aim of the society is to educate the public. Arlington is owned by the U.S. Army and will be until all the graves are filled, at which time it will be turned over to the National Parks Service.

The business meeting included the treasurer's report given by Patti D'Aurora.

The 100th anniversary committee noted 68 people have made reservations to attend the celebration on Saturday at Undo's. Two state officers who will attend are Kathy Dixon, current Ohio state regent, and Opal Grueser, state librarian. Welch said the chapter will initiate six new members during the program.

The Service to America Committee issued a reminder that members record their service hours. A DAR Genealogy Lecture Series will involve finding women's maiden names

In a Junior American Citizens update, it was announced that the local chapter had 49 Ohio state winners, 33 of which were first-place winners. On the national level, there were 10 winners -- four first place, five second place and one third place. "We should be very proud of our local students," a spokeswoman commented.

Under old business, the America 250 Project will involve partnering with Historic Fort Steuben to fund a statue of Baron Von Steuben.

In new business, Mary Ann Jesse read the proposed bylaws changes designed to bring the chapter into compliance with actions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes were approved.

Valles suggested that the Excellence in Historic Preservation award be presented to the fort, which was approved by the chapter. The award will be presented at the gala.

The sunshine report included special concerns and prayers. Days to fly the flag were reviewed.

The next meeting is the centennial banquet on Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. Valles and Carol Skerbetz are greeters.

Valles gave the benediction.
