The CDI started in May 2013 as a six-month community service project and is celebrating its ninth year as an all-volunteer operation. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides substantial dietary support to area cancer patients while undergoing treatments.
"Our physician-referred patients are both nutritionally and financially distressed and are having to choose between purchasing food and paying monthly bills as well as coping with the hardships associated with a cancer diagnosis," an information letter noted.
"During this year alone, we have assisted cancer patients from Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The patients received food items at our distributions, held the third Saturday of each month at our pantry, located in space donated by the First Westminster Presbyterian Church in Steubenville."
