Steubenville City School retirees to meet Thursday

STEUBENVILLE -- Steubenville City School Retirees met for lunch at North Star Restaurant in McDonald, Pa., on May 12.

The next lunch will be held at Abdalla's Tavern and Grill in Stratton at 12:30 p.m.Thursday.

All retirees are welcome. No reservations are needed.

Low-cost spay and neuter

clinic is taking appointments

STEUBENVILLE -- The Brooke County Animal Welfare League will hold its next low-cost spay and neuter clinic/RASCAL on July 9-10 at the Steubenville American Legion Post 33, located at 808 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.

RASCAL is an acronym for Roaming Animal Sterilization Clinic at Low Cost.

Interested pet owners must call (304) 374-4443 immediately as appointments are limited and required, and there are no walk-ins, a spokesperson emphasized.

Appointments are not limited to Brooke County residents.

Ron Retzer Trio to perform at Hill Top Presbyterian Church

TORONTO -- The Ron Retzer Trio will perform at Hill Top Presbyterian Church, 110 county Road 46, Toronto, on Sunday, beginning at 6 p.m.

"We are very excited to host them and hope that the entire community comes out to hear their inspirational music," a church spokesperson noted.

There will be refreshments following the music. A love offering will be taken.

Cynthia's Rainbow 5K

is scheduled for Sunday

WINTERSVILLE -- Cynthia's Rainbow 5K Run/Walk will held Sunday at 9 a.m. beginning and ending at Indian Creek High School.

Proceeds benefit the Cynthia Rose Phillipson Charitable Foundation in memory of Cynthia Rose Philipson, daughter of Carol and Todd Phillipson, who died Nov. 2, 2014. The foundation supports scholarships for students from area schools, Mary's Meals and Cornerstone of Hope

They anticipate approximately 150 participants. Awards will presented in several categories. All participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments after the race.

"The Phillipson family would like to thank the participants, the volunteers and all the local businesses who generously contributed to this worthy cause," a spokesperson noted.

The next event sponsored by the foundation is the annual golf outing scheduled for July 9 at the Cadiz Country Club.

Wellsburg teen is crowned

Miss West Virginia Earth

WELLSBURG -- Ava Nicole Shane of Wellsburg has been crowned Teen Miss West Virginia Earth and will compete for the title of Teen Miss Earth USA in January.

The daughter of Mike and Geri Shane, she is a sophomore honors student at Brooke High School and a two-year letter-winner on the school's dance team, for which she has received leadership and sportsmanship awards.

She is in the National Technical Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Interact. A pageant winner at the Wellsburg Applefest and Brooke County Fair for many years, she is co-directing the newly formed Wellsburg Fourth of July Celebration Pageant.

WVU Extension representative

WELLSBURG -- Anyone needing help creating an e-mail account, downloading e-books and learning other Internet and computer skills is welcome to visit the Brooke County Public Library from 11 a.m. to noon June 13.

A representative of the West Virginia University Extension Service will teach those and other skills. Individuals may bring their own charged devices or use one of the library's computers.

Follansbee branch offers help with resumes, applications

FOLLANSBEE -- The Follansbee Branch Library will offer help in using computers to create resumes and submit online job applications from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 11.

Participants are encouraged to bring information about their work experience and other background that may be helpful.

Registration isn't required, but visitors will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.

Senior fitness classes offered

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library is offering Geri-Fit, a 45-minute strength training class for older adults.

Participants start lifting light weights, usually while seated and can work at their own pace. They should bring a set of light dumbbells, a stretch band and water to drink.

The video fitness classes are held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Follansbee Library, 844 Main St., and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at the Brooke County Library, 945 Main St. Those interested in participating in the free classes should register by calling (304) 737-1551 ext. 106.
