Brilliant American Legion Post
hosting 9/11 ceremony Friday
BRILLIANT -- The Brilliant American Legion Post 573 will join with area police and fire and rescue personnel to pay tribute to the veterans, first responders and innocent Americans who perished as a result of the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001.
The public is invited to attend the remembrance ceremony on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Brilliant 9/11 Memorial located next to the Brilliant American Legion Post at 210 Market St., Brilliant.
During the tribute, Buckeye Local Junior-Senior High School will provide music, the Brilliant Volunteer Fire Department will raise the garrison flag on its ladder truck, the Brilliant American Legion will conduct a rifle salute and a wreath will be laid on the memorial.
The guest speaker will be retired Capt. Janet Petrella, who served in the Army Reserve Nurse Corps from 1991 to 2003 with the Combat Support Hospital.
The ceremony will be available live on the American Legion Facebook page (The Brilliant American Legion Post 573).
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the Legion hall.
'Save A Life Day' Thursday
At Swaney Memorial Library
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Swaney Memorial Library in New Cumberland is hosting "Save a Life Day" on Thursday at the library located on 201 S. Court St.
This event will include NARCAN, CPR and first aid training with an option for first aid certification. The event is free, but interested persons must register in advance by calling (304) 564-3471 to reserve a spot.
There will be CPR demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and NARCAN training sessions from 10 a.m. to 11a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Those wishing to receive free NARCAN must first attend one of the two training sessions.
These free services are offered to the public by the Hancock County Health Department and Hancock County EMS. For information, contact the library.
Tri-State Writers Society
plans meeting for Sept. 13
STEUBENVILLE -- The Tri-State Writers Society, led by award-winning, local author, Karina Garrison, will meet Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. in the back dining room of the Steubenville Eat 'n Park.

Unionport Lodge is holding
chicken and steak cookout
UNIONPORT -- Unionport Lodge F&AM No. 333, located at county Road 39, Unionport, will be holding a chicken and steak cookout on Sept. 17 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The menu will feature one-half chicken or steak, baked potato, cole slaw, green beans, cake and ice cream.

retirees to meet Thursday
STEUBENVILLE -- Steubenville City Schools retirees met for lunch at Dee Jay's BBQ Ribs & Grille in Weirton on Aug. 11.
A collection was launched for the group's Christmas charity for needy adults.
The next lunch will be held at the Ville in Steubenville on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The October lunch is scheduled for Oct. 13 at 12:30 p.m. at Capraro's Restaurant & Lounge in Hopedale.
Fall classic gun bash set
for Saturday in Richmond
RICHMOND -- Richmond Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co., 7452 state Route 152 S., Richmond, will be hosting its fourth-annual fall classic gun bash fundraiser on Saturday.
Doors open at 1 p.m. with a $20 donation for a ticket entitling the holder to food and beverage. There will be ammo, liquor and Chinese auction drawings at the event. For information on tickets, call (740) 765-5390 or check out the Facebook page.

Big Band 200 Dance Club
season kicks off on Saturday
WHEELING -- The next season of the Big Band 200 Dance Club kicks off Saturday at 7 p.m. with dancing to the music of regional favorite Wally Merriman.
The dance will be held at the Osiris Shrine at Monument Place in Elm Grove. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the door. Students with school ID can attend for $15. A full five-dance season membership is $85. First-time guests can attend their first dance at no charge. The club recommends making reservations by calling Diane Demarest at (304) 280-3206.
The rest of the season includes a Christmas-themed dance on Dec. 10 with the Wally Gingers Orchestra, a Greensburg-area Big Band that has been playing since the 1940s; local musician John Banco and Friends on March 11; and the Swingin' BopCats, another Big Band from the Beaver-Butler area, on April 29. The season will wrap up on June 2 with a barbecue and dance at the Hess Shelter at Oglebay Park. The Wally Merriman Quartet will provide the music.
The dress code for all dances, except for the outdoor dance, is semi-formal. Men must wear a tie at all times and a jacket while on the dance floor. Women may wear a dress, skirt or slacks, "as long as the outfit is dressy and tasteful," a news release notes. All dances are BYOB, but the club will provide coffee, tea, soft drinks, ice and snacks at no charge.
Pleasant Hill School House
Museum open house Sunday
STEUBENVILLE -- The Pleasant Hill School House Historical Museum located at 3125 state Route 213, Steubenville, is hosting an open house on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
"Come and see what school was like in the 1800s," a representative encouraged. "You can browse the building and share in conversation with some of the board members. You will be surprised with what is inside."
Pasta dinner fundraiser
Sunday at Mingo K of C hall
MINGO JUNCTION -- A pasta dinner fundraiser will be held on the second Sunday of the month this fall at the Mingo Knights of Columbus Hall, Council 4361, 117 Legion Drive, Mingo Junction.
