Auxiliary hosting breakfast, bake sale Sunday at post home
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville American Legion Argonne Post 33 Auxiliary will hold a breakfast and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
It will be held at the post home, located at 808 N. Fifth St. and Madison Avenue, and is open to the public. The menu will be scrambled eggs, sausage patties, home-fried potatoes and pancakes, all for $8.
The auxiliary is planning a Halloween bash for Oct. 29 with details to be announced.
Pine Grove Church recruiting vendors for annual craft show
HAMMONDSVILLE -- Pine Grove Methodist Church is planning its annual craft show and is in the process of recruiting craft tables/vendors.
The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Saline Township Complex in Hammondsville.
Anyone interested in setting up a craft table may contact Sue at (203) 343-6323 or Keith at (740) 278-5874. The cost for the tables is $20 for one table and $5 for any additional ones.
Banned Books Week being
observed by library system
STEUBENVILLE -- Banned Books Week is being observed the week of Sept. 18-25 by the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
Banned Books Week is an annual event created by the American Library Association to celebrate the freedom to read and spotlight current and historical attempts to censor books. In 2021, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 729 challenges to library, school and university materials and services, affecting 1,597 books, according to a news release from the local library system.
During this week, Jefferson County residents can visit their local library branch to view a display of books that have been banned or challenged from years past across the country.
The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County provides access to its materials to all people of all ages and recently passed a resolution as a measure to reaffirm its commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, noted Jennifer Cesta, the library system's public relations coordinator.
The resolution can be read in full on the library's website or upon request in person at all library locations.
Ohio Valley Business and
Professional Women to meet
STEUBENVILLE -- The Ohio Valley Business and Professional Women will kick off the 2022-23 club year with its first meeting set for Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The meeting location will be the Eastern Gateway Community College's Regional Workforce Building, located at 4525 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, next to DiCarlo's Pizza.
The speakers will be Cristen Tarquinio and Leanna Lulla from EGCC, and Justin DiVittorio, machining instructor, will be giving demos on some of the programs in the Workforce Building.
The cost of the meeting meal is $20 with attempts to accommodate individuals with dietary restrictions. The OVBPW's mission is "to achieve equity in the workplace for all women through advocacy, information and knowledge" and to provide professional and personal growth opportunities.
The BPW meets on the third Tuesday of the month, usually for an evening dinner gathering, from September through May. Membership in the OVBPW is open to area women interested in joining. Annual dues are $40.
Anyone can join the Ohio Valley Business and Professional Woman's Club, whether actively working or retired.
4-H Varieties soup fundraiser, auction planned for Sept. 25
SMITHFIELD -- The 4-H Varieties will be holding a fall soup fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 in the kitchen of the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.
There will be more than 10 soups to choose from with large orders available for $8 and children's orders costing $5.
A kid's tray includes a small soup, fruit snacks and a juice box.
A meal includes soup, cornbread, crackers and a drink. Takeout is available.
In addition to the soup fundraiser, there will be a silent auction that includes a Dave Barnhouse print, Pittsburgh Zoo tickets and Moundsville Penitentiary tickets.
Games and crafts will be available for children.
Unionport Lodge is holding
chicken and steak cookout
UNIONPORT -- Unionport Lodge F&AM No. 333, located at county Road 39, Unionport, will be holding a chicken and steak cookout on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The menu will feature one-half chicken or steak, baked potato, cole slaw, green beans, cake and ice cream.
Crochet club to meet Sept. 21
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Crochet Club will meet at noon Sept. 21.
The group is for adults, beginners through experts. Participants should bring their own supplies and projects. For those who need help, someone will be available to offer assistance or instruction.
