Hotspots from the library
offering Internet service
STEUBENVILLE -- Connect wirelessly to the Internet fast and free with mobile hotspots available now for checkout at the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
"Jefferson County residents who don't have Internet service can get unlimited digital access to jobs, homework help and health information from their home with the hotspots from the library," explained Mike Gray, library director.
Hotspots allow library cardholders who don't have the Internet to easily get online from almost anywhere, use a wifi-enabled device such as a tablet, smartphone or a computer and connect to the world-wide web.
The library's mobile hotspots run on a fast, 5G network and can connect 30 devices at one time. Each hotspot kit comes with a charger, charging cord and instruction sheet.
The hotspots are available to Jefferson County residents to take home and borrow for up to seven days. They are available at each library branch and must be checked out by an adult. Hotspots can be reserved in advance by contacting the library.

Hancock Humane Foundation
is having yard sale Saturday
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Humane Foundation will hold a yard sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 241 Ohio River Blvd., New Cumberland.

Last call for roses, apple pies from Wellsburg Kiwanis Club
WELLSBURG -- The Wellsburg Kiwanis Club is selling bouquets of roses and apple pies with today the last day for orders.

STEUBENVILLE -- The Brooke County Animal Welfare League will host a Roaming Animal Sterilization Clinic at Low Cost visit to the Steubenville American Legion Post 33 on 805 N. Fifth St. on Oct. 1 and 2.

Brooke Hills Playhouse offers
acting classes for youth
WELLSBURG -- Brooke County Arts Council President Julia Barnhart has announced Brooke Hills Playhouse will hold acting classes for students in primary, middle and high schools, particularly those interested in appearing in the playhouse's annual children's play.
The eight-week course will help children build confidence in their stage skills by focusing on acting and stage terminology, emotions and body language, voice delivery and projection, movement which includes dancing and singing, how to learn lines, how to become the character, costume and performance.
The one-hour classes will run from Oct. 1 through Nov. 19 and be held at 10 a.m., for children in kindergarten through fourth grade, and 11:30 a.m., for grades 5-9, at Wellsburg Christian Church.
The cost is $100, which may be made in two or three monthly payments. Families with more than one child will receive a $10 discount for each additional child.
"We had such a great turnout last year when we offered this class. Most of our actors got roles in 'Alice in Wonderland,' our children's show this past season. They all did a wonderful job. We can't wait to see their skills improve as they grow older," Barnhart said.
National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists named
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corp. have announced the names of more than 16,000 semifinalists in the 68th-annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.
About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
Area students named semifinalists are Jillian Cottrill or Weirton Madonna High School and Shane Thoma of Brooke High School
NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 340 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC's goals of honoring the nation's scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

Toronto Senior Citizens
announce prize winners
TORONTO -- Judy Bickler opened the Sept. 15 meeting of the Toronto Senior Citizens, expressing appreciation for the help of members Janet Boyuk, Peggy Ziarko, Mary Ann McGee, Jean Cline and Cheryl Adams.
Joyce Zimmerman gave the blessing and led in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Joyce Dobbs won the 50-50 drawing.
The fall wreath donated by Mary Ann McGee won by Rosemary Bonafine.

Bingo winners were Emma Spicer, JoAnn Lewellyn, Pat Pfabe and Marilyn Izzi.

Soup and sandwiches theme
for Brooke Recipe Club
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library's adults-only Cook by the Book Recipe Club will meet at noon Sept. 29.
Every month, the club works with a theme. Those participating choose a recipe, make it and bring it into the library with a copy of the recipe. Club members then share the finished product, swap recipes and engage in fellowship.

WEIRTON -- First Choice America Credit Union's "Cool Kids Passport to Fun" will offer a free day of fun on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Starvaggi Park in Weirton.
The event is open to all children who must be accompanied by an adult.
