Chamber, library partner to offer Books & Brew event
Oct. 8 at the Main Library
STEUBENVILLE -- Taste your way through local craft beer, sample a charcuterie board and learn all about craft beer at the Books & Brews event on Oct. 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Main Library in downtown Steubenville.
The event is sponsored by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
"We are so excited to partner with the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce for a Books & Brews event," said Sarita Asawa, the library's community outreach and programming coordinator. "This event will include everything from craft beer education, charcuterie boards and, of course, craft beer samples," Asawa noted.
Those who attend can listen to a presentation to learn how to tell the difference between types of craft beers and their flavor profiles.
"The presenters are Jim Chaney, certified beer judge, and Daniel Merritt, who has extensive experience in the commercial and homebrew side of craft beer. By the end, patrons will have all the craft beer lingo they'll need to talk knowledgeably about IPAs, Hefeweizens and stouts," explained Asawa. Information on the brewing process and what it takes to make beer at home will be provided.
The event is for adults 21 and older. The first 50 people who either show their library card or sign up for one will receive a limited edition Books & Brews tasting glass.

"Unique events like Books and Brews are what create the culture of our community," commented Kate Sedgmer, president of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.
"I'm thrilled that the library and chamber can partner together to bring networking and education on a fun topic for the community," Sedgmer added.
Holy Trinity Philoptochos sale
for gyros and more is Oct. 4
STEUBENVILLE -- The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church's Philoptochos Society will host a gyro sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the church, located at 300 S. Fourth St., Steubenville.
The gyros are $9 each, and there will be a charge of 25 cents for extra tzatziki sauce.
Other items for sale are koulourakia -- twist cookies -- at $8 per dozen.
Also available are grape leaves at three for $3.50; spanakopita, $3.50 each; and baklava at $3 each.
Patrons may place phone orders the day of the sale to (740) 282-9835 or Fax orders to (740) 282-2091.
Patrons are asked to allow a minimum of 20 minutes for all orders.
There will be free delivery on orders of four or more gyros.
Walk-ins are welcome.
St. Mark Lutheran Church Men's Club plans garage sale
STEUBENVILLE -- The Men's Club at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 133 Lovers Lane, Steubenville, is hosting a garage sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Items will include tools, fishing equipment, glassware and Christmas items. Refreshments will be sold.
Weirton Legion, Lions to host trunk-or-treat on Oct. 15
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Post 10 and the Weirton Lions Club will be having a trunk-or-treat for children on Oct. 15.
The event will be held at 4120 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, from noon to 3 p.m.
There will be "lots of fun, candy and treats for the kids," a spokesperson noted.
Pottery Addition VFD having
chicken dinner fundraiser
STEUBENVILLE -- The Pottery Addition Volunteer Fire Department, located at 448 Kingsdale Road, Steubenville, will host a chicken roast dinner fundraiser on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. or until sold out.
The cost is $12 and includes half a roasted chicken, potato salad, green beans, a roll, drink and dessert.
Patrons can dine in or get takeout.
The event will include basket drawings and a 50-50 drawings with tickets available at the door.
Music hour concert Oct. 9 at Scott Memorial UMC in Cadiz
CADIZ -- Scott Memorial United Methodist Church is hosting a free music hour concert on Oct. 9, beginning at 6 p.m.
It will feature live music by Ken Staley, guitar and vocals; Dustin Kinsey, keyboard and vocals; Roger Warren, saxophone and vocals; Bob Campbell, bass guitar; and special guest singer Susan Huntsman. Five of the songs will be originals that Staley and Kinsey penned.
"All are welcome and encouraged to spend an hour with us on Oct. 9," Kinsey said.
Scott Memorial United Methodist Church is located at 817 E. Market St., Cadiz across from Ice Cream Island.
