Record high numbers logged for library summer reading program

STEUBENVILLE -- While numbers show that children embraced books to read for the fun of it during the summer months, they weren't the only age group participating in the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County's Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program.
More than 1,300 people were a part of it.
"Children, adults and teens came out in record high numbers this summer to participate and earn chances to win big prizes such as bikes, televisions, passes to the Pittsburgh zoo and a trip for four to Kings Island," said Children's Services Coordinator Misty Teasdale.
The countywide library system makes the reading program inviting from the time patrons step inside the library with decorations of life-size displays to professional programs that families can attend together, according to Teasdale.
"Participants got to enjoy fun interactive programs like a magic show with Jim Kleefeld and educational programs on topics such as manatees and knot tying," she said.
New this year, the library challenged businesses and organizations to register and read, watch or listen. The UPS Store in Steubenville, for example, formed a team of five and won a free lunch from the library.
"It's great to see the library offer events and initiatives in which the whole community can participate. Through this program, our store's employees were able to compete among themselves even to see how many books we could read. We can't wait to participate in other activities such as this," commented participant Matt Gallabrese.
For those who missed this summer's program, not to worry, noted Teasdale. "It will return next year starting June 5 with an animal theme of 'Tails and Tales.'"
