Local three-day collection
effort to help Floridians in
aftermath of Hurricane Ian
STEUBENVILLE -- A local effort gets under way next week with a three-day collection of various items to help Floridians in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.
Items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Franciscan Square off University Boulevard in Steubenville.
While no clothing items will be accepted, the following items are needed: Water bottles (not gallons), baby formula, baby wash, diapers, wash cloths, pacifiers, jars or boxes of food, baby wipes, adult wipes, first aid kits, toiletries, cleaning supplies, Depends, new socks, canned goods, nonperishable foods, batteries, flashlights, Tylenol, Motrin, baby aspirin (adults), bug sprays, sunscreens, baby sunscreen, Gatorade, bandage tape, Pedialyte, feminine pads, bandages, Pepto Bismol for children and adults, plastic gloves, masks for adults and children, ankle braces, children's Dimetapp, Robutussin for children and adults, Lysterine, hand sanitizer, I modium, 4×4 bandage pads, 2×2 bandages, wrist braces and knee braces.
The items will be sent to a church in the Naples/Fort Meyers area to be distributed, according to organizers who noted that Franciscan University of Steubenville is joining in on the collection effort.
"All this can't be done without the kindness of all the wonderful people in our Tri-State Area," a spokesperson commented.
Weirton Legion Post 10 holding
indoor flea market on Saturday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Post 10, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, will be holding an indoor flea market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be baked goods and 20 tables of items featuring "something for everyone," a spokesperson said.
St. John Fisher in Richmond having Oktoberfest on Sunday
RICHMOND -- Members of the Catholic Women's Club of St. John Fisher Church, located at 7457 state Route 152, Richmond, are continuing to prepare for their annual Oktoberfest dinner from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
This year's event will welcome the return of inside dining with patrons to be served restaurant style. For those who do not wish to dine in, orders for take-out meals can be placed by calling (740) 765-4142.
The menu features an authentic German fare complete with pork roast, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, haluski, bratwurst, German potato salad, sweet and sour German red cabbage, a roll and a choice of apple or pumpkin pie. The cost is $12 per person.
There will be a 50/50 drawing and drawings for baskets inside the church. All tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. Tickets will be available to those who are picking up takeout meals as well.
Live music will be provided by Tom Zielinsky.
'Fall Festival' theme for final First Friday of 2022 tonight
STEUBENVILLE -- Today marks the Harmonium Project's final First Friday of 2022 with a fitting "Fall Festival" theme.
Like the others, this Friday's event will feature music, food, vendors and more from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the 100 blocks of North and South Fourth streets.
Acaciawood, John Paul Von Arx and Crosby and Ellender will be performing music on the main stage, according to the Harmonium Project's Facebook page.
There will be trick-or-treating for children under age 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. "Wear a costume and stop by every vendor with a pumpkin sign to get your treat," the Facebook post notes.
Pumpkin painting at the Harmonium Tent will be another holiday attraction, and there will be "bouncy castles" in the South Fourth Street block.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a carved pumpkin to the Harmonium Tent at 6 p.m. to enter it in the "the Steubenville Pumpkin Carving Competition. Your pumpkin will be on display for the people to vote on throughout the night."
St. Agnes CWC discusses Day with Bishop, pumpkin roll sale
MINGO JUNCTION -- The Catholic Woman's Club of St. Agnes Church at 204 St. Clair Ave., Mingo Junction, began its Sept. 20 meeting with a prayer for the end of the war in Ukraine and peace throughout the world.
The Rev. Jim Dunfee led the Pledge of Allegiance and said grace before the luncheon.
Hostesses were Karen Giuliani and Kathy Coldebella.
The meeting was conducted by Debbie Riccardo with members encouraged to attend the Day with the Bishop, which has been changed from October to Sept. 29 at St. Joseph Church in Amsterdam.
The Rosary Congress was to be held Oct. 1-6 at Holy Rosary Church with St. Agnes leading the Rosary on Oct. 6 from noon to 6 p.m.
Relics of Blessed Carlo Acutis and the Eucharistic Miracles exhibit will be at BJKM Cafeteria Oct. 7-10.
Members were updated on the pumpkin roll sale
The last day to place an order is Oct. 19, which can be done by calling St. Agnes Hall at (740) 535-0098 Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon or 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Theresa Madden at (740) 346-5424; or Barb Crugnale at (740) 535-0174.
The cost is $13 for a pumpkin roll. A gluten-free pumpkin roll is $16.
Pick-up will be at the church hall on Monday through Thursday through Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The last day to pick up an order is Oct. 27, only from 9 a.m. to noon. Patrons are asked to pick up their order within two days of ordering.
Joanne Raha reported that she received a letter from the Diocese about supporting the seminarians. St. Agnes will be supporting Sam Ivkovich, a pre-theology student at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit.
Paula Diorio won the 50/50 drawing.
The meeting ended with Dunfee offering a prayer and a blessing.
The next meeting will be Oct. 18.
Weirton Shriners are planning pancake breakfast on Oct. 15
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Shriners will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast on Oct. 15 at the Northern Panhandle Shrine Club, located at 1221 Rice Blvd., Weirton, at the end of Cove Road by the state highway garage.
It will be held from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is open to the public.
The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage and orange juice. The cost is adults, $7; children ages 6-12, $4; and children under 6, eat free.
Brooke POW museum plans
programs for Oct. 15, Oct. 22
WELLSBURG -- The American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Museum and Education Center on Oct. 15 will present the latest in a series of programs focused on various aspects of servicemen who were captured while defending the Philippine Islands against Japanese invaders during World War II.
Set for 1 p.m. in the River Room of the Brooke County Public Library, the program will cover the prisoners of war's liberation from the work camps where many were forced to toil for the enemy's war efforts.
The final program, at 1 p.m. Oct. 22, will look at the veterans' lives upon their return home.
The free programs are funded by a $5,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Four Seasons Seniors
schedule Oct. 19 meeting
WEIRTON -- Tony LaRosa gave the opening prayer of the Sept. 21 dinner meeting of the Four Seasons Seniors, which was held at Undo's in Weirton.
It was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America."
Bonnie Smith, a guest of Cel Findley, was introduced. After the meal, members were entertained by singer Chuck Lucas.
The receipt of thank-you cards from club members was noted. The October menu will be salad, cheese lasagna or roast pork, Italian potatoes, green beans and brownies. A birthday and anniversary were acknowledged.
The nominating committee members are Helen Bayne, Laura Mamula, Rita Orler and Gene Viola.
The group voted that beginning in October and continuing through March, the meetings will begin at 5 p.m.
Cel Findley won the 50/50 drawing. Undo's gift certificates went to Nancy Smurda and Carolyn Shaffer. Door prizes went to Helen Bayne, Norma Yoho and Nancy Smurda. Patty Beltram won the fall decoration.
Tony LaRosa gave the closing prayer.
The next meeting will be Oct. 19 at Undo's.
Brooke Library offers story hour, yoga session, movies
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will be holding several programs, including a story hour, centered around "The Little Scarecrow Boy," at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
