Mount Zion Baptist planning community Thanksgiving meal
STEUBENVILLE -- Mount Zion Baptist Church, located at 221 N. Seventh St., Steubenville, will be the site of a community Thanksgiving celebration on Nov. 6, beginning at 1 p.m.
All are welcome to attend the free meal.
Volunteers and donations of food and money for it are being sought, according to organizer Tammy Gregory, who can be contacted at (740) 381-8525 or (740) 282-9244.
The Thanksgiving dinner will include turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, rolls, sweet potato pie and water, punch and apple cider.
Volunteers are needed as servers but also for setup and cleanup.
Mingo senior center to host cancer awareness fundraiser
MINGO JUNCTION -- The Mingo Junction Senior Center, located at 663 Commercial Ave., Mingo Junction, will be the site of a cancer awareness fundraiser on Thursday, featuring speakers, food, music and drawings.
The benefit for the Tony Teramana Cancer Center in Steubenville will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is open to the public, according to Diane Pernick, secretary at the center where her husband, Fred Pernick, serves as president.
The event is being sponsored by the first United Presbyterian Church of Mingo Junction, the village of Mingo Junction and the senior center.
It will include dining music by Rick Grimm, a 50-50 drawing, door prizes, refreshments and a silent auction.
Dr. Mark Trombetta, medical director of the cancer center, will be the guest speaker with "messages of hope and inspiration by Mary Antonacci and Mary Freiling," according to a promotional flier, which notes, "Donations to this worthwhile cause are greatly appreciated."

Fundraiser Water Lantern Launch Oct. 23 at Austin Lake
WINTERSVILLE -- The second-annual Water Lantern Launch on Oct. 23 is being sponsored by the Cynthia Rose Phillipson Charitable Foundation.
The event will be held at Austin Lake Park, 1002 township Highway 285A, Toronto, with registration and a time to decorate the lanterns from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The lantern launch will be from 6:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., followed by music and light refreshments until 7:30 p.m.
A lantern ordered before Oct. 16 is $21 each and $25 each after Oct. 17.

The lanterns are launched one-by-one in memory of loved ones.
Proceeds benefit the Cynthia Rose Phillipson Charitable Foundation in memory of Cynthia Rose Phillipson, daughter of Carol and Todd Phillipson, who died Nov. 2, 2014. The foundation supports scholarships for students from area schools, Mary's Meals and Cornerstone of Hope.
Chili cook-off, music Oct. 30
at Warren Township Park
TILTONSVILLE -- The TBS Trinity Chili Cook-Off will be held Oct. 30 at the Warren Township Park, located at 400 Williams St., Tiltonsville.
The outdoor church service will begin at 11 and all are welcome.
A Chinese auction will be part of the event along with music by Ron Retzer. Attendees should bring a lawn chair.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Those under age 5 are admitted for free. Admission includes samples of all chili, five voting tickets, a hot dog, cookie and drink.
In case of inclement weather this will be hosted at the Martins Ferry United Methodist Church.
TBS is a cooperative parish made up of Tiltonsville, Brilliant, Rayland, Martins Ferry and Buena Vista United Methodist churches.
Rosary Rally is scheduled
for Sunday in Follansbee
FOLLANSBEE -- The Altar and Rosary Society of St. Anthony Church in Follansbee will be sponsoring a Rosary Rally on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Main Street in Hood's Pharmacy parking lot.
"The public is invited to honor Our Lady and to pray for the right to life and the continued freedom to pray in public," a spokesperson explained.
In case of rain, the rally will move to the church.
Farm promoting agritourism
to offer tour on Saturday
WELLSBURG -- Family Roots Farm, a local producer of maple syrup at 245 Hervey Lane, will offer tours from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The family owned-and-operated farm can be traced to the days of the American Revolution. Its owners promote agritourism by partnering with local bed and breakfasts and farmers markets and offer education about the process of developing maple syrup and other produce on site and at local schools.
Shriners to hold fundraiser pancake breakfast Saturday
WEIRTON -- The Northern Panhandle Shrine Club will hold a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the club's headquarters near the state Division of Highways garage on Cove Road.
The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children, ages 6-12, with children under 6 eating free.
The meal includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice.
New Cumberland Lions Club gets updates on some events
NEW CUMBERLAND -- President Dorothy Hawkes called the meeting to order when the New Cumberland Lions Club met Sept. 27.
Rick Tinsky offered the prayer, and Betsy Wells led the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes were approved as read, and the treasurer's report was placed on file for audit.
Alan Lee reported on the Riverfest, mentioning and thanking all who helped to make the event a success. Tom Stiles had the Adopt A Highway cleanup scheduled for Oct. 1 with Oct. 8 as the rain date.
Lee noted that the Halloween date has not been set by the City Council, but when it is, the Lions Halloween party will be the same date after trick-or-treat hours end.
Hawkes introduced guests in attendance, including 1st Vice District Gov. Daniel Heintzman and Lion Charlotte Heintzman. Daniel Heintzman addressed the members, sharing his goals for the 2023-24 year as he will then be district governor.
SHS Class of 1959 to hold next luncheon Oct. 19 at Froehlich's
STEUBENVILLE -- Members of Steubenville High School's Class of 1959 held their monthly luncheon with 18 in attendance.
Wendy Suppowitz Reilly and her husband, Robert, who were traveling from Georgia, were welcomed by the group.
Norina Eroshevich provided the blessing for all present and for those unable to attend. Pete Barren shared news of progress on the new baseball field.
The next luncheon will be held Oct. 19 at 12:30 p.m. at Froehlich's Classic Corner in Steubenville. Call Norina at (740) 219-2234 for reservations. All are welcome.
Socks being collected as part of local outreach effort to help
FOLLANSBEE -- Follansbee Church of Christ, the Refocus Church, is collecting socks for homeless people served by Urban Mission Ministries.
In addition to the church at 861 Neville St., socks can be brought to Hooverson Heights Church of Christ, Hillndale Volunteer Fire Department in Mingo Junction, the Follansbee City Building and Brooke Primary North (formerly Hooverson Heights Primary School).
WMC Auxiliary is organizing
two-day 'Books Are Fun' sale
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Medical Center Auxiliary will hold a two-day "Books Are Fun" sale next week.
It will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 17 and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 18. The sale will be held in the medical center atrium located on Colliers Way. Masks are required.
Wintersville church holding trunk-or-treat on Oct. 20
WINTERSVILLE -- Wintersville Community Chapel, located at 27 Ward Drive, Wintersville, will hold a trunk-or-treat on Oct. 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
All are welcome, and costumes are optional. Parking will be in the rear lot.
It is a rain-or-shine event. In case of rain, the festivities will be moved indoors to the church fellowship hall.
Grace's Cupboard open Oct. 20
STEUBENVILLE -- Grace's Cupboard Food Pantry will be held on Oct. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, located at 2105 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville.
