Woman's club collecting items Saturday in church parking lot
WINTERSVILLE -- The GFWC Woman's Club of Wintersville will be holding a drive-thru collection of various items as an outreach program and is looking to the community for support in making it a success, according to club President Iris Craig.
The collection will be held on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Wintersville United Methodist Church.
"Our project is to provide fleece blankets for dialysis patients and nonperishable foods and gifts for children for Wintersville Good Neighbors," Craig explained.
High School Art Exhibition
opening reception Thursday
WEIRTON -- The third-annual High School Student Art Exhibition will be presented and hosted by the Top of West Virginia Arts Council with the opening reception Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Summit Art Gallery, located at 3539 Main St., Weirton.
The council is a committee of the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Brooke High, Oak Glen High, Weir High, Madonna High and the J. D. Rockefeller Career Center are confirmed to participate.
"Dreams and Nightmares" will be the theme for the show where the art may be any of the traditional mediums, including sculpture. New this year will be the acceptance of digitally produced works.
Each school may submit up to 20 pieces of art for final jurying. Five students from each school will receive award ribbons beginning with first place. The exhibition is not a competition among the schools, but a competition within the students' works submitted by each school, a spokesperson explained. The teachers and a member of the TWVAC will be the jurors with the teacher from the school being judged abstaining in the voting process. Additionally, each teacher is encouraged to submit an artwork to display in the exhibition. Some artwork will be available for purchase.
The public is invited to attend the opening reception complimented with light refreshments and also encouraged to visit the gallery during the duration of the show to view and appreciate the talent of the young artists. The activities are free of charge.
The exhibition will remain available for viewing at the Summit Art Gallery on Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., until Dec, 16. Parking is available behind the building.
The Top of WV Arts Council members work to promote the visual arts and assist the Top of WV CVB with its goals and objectives. The council members believe that young artists should be encouraged and promoted wherever and whenever the opportunity is available.
This exhibition provides a stimulus toward greater achievement for the students, the spokesperson added.
Wreaths Across America effort in New Cumberland detailed
NEW CUMBERLAND -- New Cumberland Cemetery is one of 3,000 cemeteries across America to be designated as an official Wreaths Across America location.
The WAA organization ships fresh balsam wreaths to member locations every December, and these wreaths are placed on the graves of local veterans, a spokesperson noted. This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is Dec. 17.
On that day, thousands of volunteers in every state will show up to honor veterans by decorating their graves. Individuals who would like to purchase a wreath for this ceremony, the cost is $15. Order forms may be picked up at the city building in New Cumberland or a form will be mailed by calling George Hines, district coordinator, at (304) 670-7092.
The deadline for orders is Nov. 29.
The wreath ordered may be grave specific or it can be placed on any veteran's grave. Wreath sponsors don't have to be at the cemetery that day to place a wreath
"This program is a way to honor our veterans during the holidays and to thank them for their service to our country," the spokesperson noted.
Weirton American Legion to be site of flea market Saturday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Post 10, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, will be hosting a flea market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It will include homemade baked good, wooden items, Coca-Cola items, Christmas items and more than 20 vendor tables.
Mingo Woman's Club gives
donations, gets WAA update
MINGO JUNCTION -- Co-President Stephanie Rouse conducted the October meeting of the GFWC Woman's Club of Mingo, which was held at Bay 6 in Mingo Junction.
She extended the welcome, which was followed by the club collect and Pledge of Allegiance.
Roetta Lewis gave the invocation. Treasurer Kathy Maguschak presented the financial report. The club voted to give a donation to Bay 6 for the woman's club Christmas children project.
The group also voted to give a donation and be a sponsor for the Halloween in Mingo event.
The lottery tree drawing will be held at the Christmas meeting, it was announced.
A report on Wreaths Across America was given by Rouse, chairman. It will take place at noon on Dec. 17 at Oakland Cemetery, where there are 212 veterans' graves. A wreath sponsorship is $15. Volunteers and sponsors are needed.
Plans for the Christmas party will be finalized at the November meeting.
The Mingo club served as hostess of the fall conference, which involved a Zoom meeting on Oct. 22. Stephanie
Rouse, Janet Petrella, Sharon Cole-Isner and Lewis participated.
Given October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cole-Isner distributed pink water jugs to remind members to get a mammogram.
Clara Sue Milewsky provided the refreshments.
Shelly Bateman will be the hostesses for the November meeting, which will be held Thursday at Bay 6. The speaker will be from the Friendship Room.
Christmas portion of Handel's
'Messiah' to be performed
STEUBENVILLE -- The annual performance of the Christmas portion of Handel's "Messiah" will be held at 3 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, located at 1443 Belleview Blvd., Steubenville.

FOLLANSBEE -- There will be a Christmas craft, soup and bake sale at Follansbee United Methodist Church on Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children's author to read during special story hour
WELLSBURG -- Children's author Colleen Driscoll will read her book, "Piper the Elf Trains Santa" for a special story hour at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brooke County Public Library.

Cabbage roll, pierogi sale
continues at Weirton church
WEIRTON -- A frozen, uncooked cabbage roll and cheese and potato pierogi sale sponsored by St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is under way through Monday.
The cost for six cabbage rolls is $20, and a dozen pierogis is $12. Orders can be placed by calling (304) 479-0196.
The scheduled order pickup is Nov. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Hall, 604 Colliers Way, across from Weirton Medical Center.
Soup, sandwich and dessert sale in Follansbee Wednesday
FOLLANSBEE -- The Altar and Rosary Society of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 1300 Charles St., Wellsburg, will hold its monthly soup, sandwich and dessert sale on Wednesday in the church hall.
Five different soups and sandwiches will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sold out.
Sarris candy bars will be available for $2 each as part of a yearly fundraiser.

The final soup sale for the year will be Dec 14.
Soup sales are on the second Wednesday of the month.
ADK Ohio Beta Chapter to hold Christmas party on Dec. 6
STEUBENVILLE -- Ohio Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher's Sorority met on Nov. 1 at Malara Hall in Steubenville with President Linda Lenzi presiding.
Chaplain Pam Fithen opened the meeting with the reading of "Autumn Months." Secretary Joyce Cammilletti read the minutes and correspondence and took roll call. Treasurer Teresa Nicholson, presented her report, which was accepted.
Altruistic Chairman Kathy Henry collected volunteer hours from the members. Members completed an ADK-based crossword puzzle for fraternity education. For world understanding, Peggy Pyles presented information concerning Canada.
Ohio Beta Chapter is in charge of the 2023 district meeting that will be on Oct. 14. A committee to plan for this affair will be selected at the January meeting.
Money was collected for the Wintersville Good Neighbors toy drive at the Wintersville United Methodist Church.
Joyce Cammilletti and JoAnn McCraley served as meeting hostesses.
The next meeting will be the annual Christmas party on Dec. 6 at DeeJay's in Weirton, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with Dorie Mallas and Linda Lenzi as hostesses. Members are reminded to bring a $10 gift for the auction.
ICMS students' artistic talents included in holiday display
MINGO JUNCTION -- Indian Creek Middle School students will be sharing their artistic talents with the public this holiday season by participating in a special project in Steubenville.
Art teacher Renee Brothers said 10 of her seventh- and eighth-graders will help decorate a window in downtown Steubenville in conjunction with a revitalization project from Nelson's Fine Arts. Brothers said other area schools were invited to add decor to empty storefronts, and the ICMS artwork will be exhibited along North Fourth Street.
"It's a window decoration for the Nutcracker Village," Brothers said. "Nelson's Fine Arts had contacted local schools, and our seventh- and eighth-graders are doing the project."
Her students must have it decorated by Nov. 18 and will be at 147 N. Fourth St., which formerly housed Mike's Sweepers.
She said the group's theme is "Elf" meets "Nutcracker Ballet" and they plan to work at the site on Veterans Day. The young artists include seventh-grade students Danica Stelfox, Phoenix Vines, Gianna Preveich, Jamie-Lyn Northrop, Khloe Buchanan and Dalana Bove and eighth-graders Nina Householder, Alexis Howard, Brilee Tirpak, Skielor Truax, Dakota Forester, Kimble Cooper and Morgan McCumbers.
Brothers said the students couldn't wait to get started. "They are excited to do it and picked the theme. It was a collaborative effort."
The windows will remain on display through the holidays.
Brooke County Sportsman Club
to hold turkey shoot Sunday
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Sportsman Club, at 2540 McAdoo Ridge, will hold a turkey shoot from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The prize is $20 so the winner may purchase his or her own turkey or something else.
Bell Chapel UMC to host
veterans dinner on Friday
STEUBENVILLE -- Bell Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 3419 state Route 213, Steubenville, will host a veterans spaghetti and meatballs dinner on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m.
Veterans eat for free. Spouses eat for $5. All money collected will go to veterans' programs.
Free yoga class being offered
WELLSBURG -- Taylor Provenzano will lead a free yoga class at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooke County Public Library.
Participants will learn about the philosophy of yoga as well as proper breathing, postures and movements.
Modifications will be available for those not able to be on the floor. Participants are asked to bring a bath towel or mat.
