Cloak and Dagger planning special matinee on Sunday featuring O. Henry stories
WEIRTON -- November's Cloak and Dagger On the Air will be a special matinee at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Admission is free, although donations are always appreciated. Doors open at 3:15 p.m. when R.J. Gaudio, troubadour, will play pop, folk and rock standards. Light refreshments will be available. The program also will livestream from the Ohio Valley Cloak & Dagger Facebook page, starting at 3:45 p.m.
This month's performance -- Cloak and Dagger On the Air presents O. Henry's Four of a Kind at 4 -- features radio-style adaptations of four classic short stories by writer William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), better known by the penname O. Henry.
While O. Henry created the now-iconic character the Cisco Kid with his 1907 short story "The Caballero's Way," he is perhaps best known for his short fiction, including the poignant 1905 tale, "The Gift of the Magi," which will be one of the matinee's featured stories. The afternoon's three other adaptations will include the seasonally appropriate "Two Thanksgiving Gentleman," "The Last Leaf" and "The Sleuths."
"Last month, we shone our spotlight on the horror genre, and this month, we look to the holiday season and the end of autumn," Pete Fernbaugh, executive producer and head writer, said. "No one captures the singular moment in which we make life-defining decisions quite like O. Henry. And he renders those moments with wit and poignancy, capturing the impetuosity that often catapults those decisions to fruition. I've been wanting to present a selection of his stories for a few years now, and I'm thrilled to finally be able to do so," Fernbaugh said.
This month's cast includes Rob DeSantis, Bethany Fernbaugh, Pete Fernbaugh, Robert J. Gaudio, Noah Hilton, Nancy Longo, Karissa Martin, Malachi McClendon, Ralph Parissi, Abby Perry, Terri Perry and Savannah Schroll Guz, with an original score composed and performed by classical pianist Roberta Fedoush.
Top of WV CVB is located at 3539 Main St., Weirton. Ample parking is available behind the building, where there also is an entrance. Individuals with mobility impairments may more easily enter through the building's front entrance.
Cloak and Dagger On the Air is a monthly theatrical series from the Ohio Valley Cloak and Dagger Co. that celebrates audio drama from all eras, particularly the fabled Golden Age of Radio. By re-imagining classic radio dramas and literary works, along with presenting original stories written and produced by independent writer and actor Pete Fernbaugh, Cloak and Dagger On the Air "strives to give audiences an immersive experience that engages the theater of their imagination in creating a fully realized storytelling adventure," a news release notes. "The Cloak and Dagger On the Air podcast completes the experience by presenting these stories in the way they were meant to be seen -- by the mind's eye."
