Toronto Sunrise Seniors salute veterans, present certificates,
plan trip and Christmas dinner
TORONTO -- The Nov. 11 meeting of the Toronto Sunrise Seniors was called to order by President Barbara Pritts.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of member Tim Gribben. Sandi Radvansky, vice president, asked veterans in attendance to stand and be recognized and presented them with a gift certificate in honor of their service.
Gloria Boley, chaplain, offered the blessing before the turkey dinner was served. Following dinner, members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and Secretary Laura Sheets conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes of the previous meeting.
Treasurer Judy Sabol provided the financial report which was filed for audit. Social Secretary Marlene Garret acknowledged November birthdays.
Members were reminded about the trip planned for Dec. 7 to see Oglebay's Festival of Lights. The bus leaves the stadium parking lot at noon and will return by 9 p.m. Pritts announced that the bus has been filled with help from the other Toronto Senior Citizens group.
Copies of the revised bylaws were distributed to the members for review and will be voted on at the January meeting. Pritts thanked the officers and volunteer member Dorothy Pavelka for their work in revising the group's bylaws.
Ruth White reported that the Dec. 9 meeting would be a catered Christmas dinner and would be held in the Roosevelt Commons area.
Mary Edwards was honored as member of the month. Her favorite memories, she said, included a Viking River cruise and a trip to Disney World.
Members participated in a Thanksgiving survey in which they ranked things to be thankful for, including the gift of life, a home, family, wisdom, education, faith, adequate food and clothing, daily necessities such as hot water and electricity and the gift of friends.
Darlene Naukam and Frank Marino won the 50-50 drawing. Members played bingo after the meeting.
The next meeting is Dec. 9. "If you or a guest have not yet signed up for the catered meal and wish to attend, call Ruth White at (740) 544-6328," it was announced.
International Senior Club gets update on trips, hears plans for Christmas dinner Dec. 13
WEIRTON -- The International Senior Club met Nov. 8 at Undo's in Weirton.
Tony LaRosa reminded the members about Veterans Day "on the 11th month, 11th day and 11th hour" and thanked those who served. He read the poem "Flanders Field" in their honor.
He also wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
Gabriel Arlia led in the Pledge of Allegiance, and members joined in singing "God Bless America." A Thanksgiving dinner followed.
President Regina Truax introduced guest Alexis Marzzarella. The business meeting was canceled, but Truax reminded members that 2023 dues are due, and the Christmas dinner will be held Dec. 13. Members were encouraged to bring a toy for distribution to area children in need.
Those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in November were acknowledged.
Get well cards were sent to several members.
Several bus tours were announced, including, Dec. 2, Oglebay Festival of Lights, Wheeling; Dec. 5, Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh; March 31-April 8, Royal Carrbbean Cruise; April 15, Rock and Roll Doo Wop, Capitol Theatre, Wheeling; April 19-21, Bally's casino, Atlantic City, N.J.; April 30, the Ultimate Doors tribute concert, Columbiana, Ohio; May 7, Lincoln Park Performing Art Center, "American in Paris," Midland, Pa.; May 17-19, Sight and Sound Theater, "Moses," Lancaster, Pa.; and June 18, Lincoln Park Performing Art Center, "The Play That Goes Wrong," Midland, Pa.

Scholarship drawing set for college savings program
CHARLESTON -- In celebration of the 20th anniversary of West Virginia's SMART529 college savings program, state Treasurer Riley Moore, the West Virginia College board of trustees and Jumpstart Savings Programs have been holding drawings for $20,000 SMART529 scholarships.
The next drawing will be held in December and the deadline to register is Dec. 3, which may be done by visiting www.wvtreasury.com/20 years.
Parents and legal guardians of children age 14 and younger on Aug. 10 and may enter and multiple children from the same household may be entered. Children born after Aug. 10 aren't eligible.
Both parent or legal guardian and child must be West Virginia residents, and only one entry per child will be accepted.
SMART529 is a college savings program through which tax deferred savings may be made for a variety of educational expenses at thousands of colleges, universities and vocational schools as well as many foreign institutions.
