WEIRTON -- The Fort Steuben Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Nov. 12 at Giovani's Restaurant in Weirton.
The call to order was given by Regent Mary Ann Jesse and the invocation by Chaplain Roberta Fedoush. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Tammy Kotyk, assistant registrar, who also led in the singing of the nation anthem. Sue Davidson, second vice regent, led the American's Creed.
The induction of Jeanne Vega as the new first vice regent was conducted by Roberta Fedoush.
Mary Ann Jesse read the president general's message.
Following the luncheon, Sue Davidson introduced the guest speaker, Erika Lyon from the OSU Extension Office of Jefferson and Harrison counties. Her program centered around native plants and herbs, which prompted many questions from chapter members.
The business meeting included the reading and acceptance of the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Patti D'Aurora gave the financial report. As discussed at the last meeting, a new CD was opened, and contributions were made to the checking and scholarship accounts, it was noted.
Under officers' reports, Registrar Tracey Dysert announced that she is assisting eight prospective members.
Francine Hauldren, America 250 chairman, reported that she met with Jerry Barilla of Historic Fort Steuben and learned that plans have been abandoned for a statue of Baron Von Steuben. The new plan is for a commemorative plaque. The Fort Steuben Chapter will continue to raise funds to be contributed to the project.
Another project for America 250, suggested by Hauldren, was to donate patriotic books to local elementary school libraries, an idea supported by the membership.
Junior American Citizens Chairman Nancy Valles announced that Tracey Dysert has agreed to act as photographer and technical assistant for JAC. Instructions for this year's contest have been distributed to local schools. The contest will be judged in December.
Janet Rymer, women's issues chairman, reminded members about the upcoming deadline for the essay contest. The theme for the year is, "Celebrating and Caring for Women." Members also may write an essay on health, career or family. The deadline for submission to state level is Jan. 10.
Members were reminded to log their Service to America hours. Possible options for projects that could be included as service hours were mentioned.
Under new business, members were reminded that Dec. 17 is the date for Wreaths Across America. Members will take part in ceremonies at Union Cemetery, Paris Cemetery and several others. The chapter voted to sponsor five wreaths.
Members were reminded to bring items to sell at the next meeting's Christmas menagerie.
The next meeting will be held Dec. 10 at noon at Giovanni's Restaurant in Weirton.
