Steubenville Kiwanis display holiday spirit

2 min read

STEUBENVILLE -- While most Christmas parties likely don't have a tarantula, a python and an opossum on the guest list, it's a tradition of sorts when it comes to the Steubenville Kiwanis Club organizing holiday festivities for first-graders at East Elementary (Garfield) School in Steubenville.

The special visitors came from their home at Oglebay's Good Zoo with a representative who explained some of their characteristics and gave the students an up-close view of them.

The party on Dec. 13 involved a pizza snack and an ice cream sandwich along with the presentation of gifts -- sweatshirts, crayons, erasers and Terrific Kids pencils.

The Kiwanis Club has made this party happen for more than 20 years with this year's event made a success with the help of the local Kiwanis, five members of the Steubenville High School Key Club and another special guest -- Doug Falk of Salem, who is the lieutenant governor of Kiwanis Division 26.

In addition to organizing the annual Christmas party, the Kiwanis were involved in other displays of outreach during December, including when members took turns ringing the bells as part of the red kettle campaign for the Salvation Army of Steubenville, which also was presented with Christmas gifts to help an adopted family.
