Association meeting Saturday
EAST SPRINGFIELD -- The annual meeting of the East Springfield Cemetery Association will be held Saturday at the East Springfield Community Center Social Hall located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m.
Any resident of the community is invited to attend and to voice his/her concerns or ask questions regarding the operation and maintenance of the cemetery.
Weirton Legion Auxiliary
hosting breakfast Sunday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Auxiliary will be hosting a breakfast on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Legion hall, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave. in Weirton.
Menu items will be sausage gravy over biscuit, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, coffee and orange juice. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for those under 10 and free for children under 5.
"Our breakfast is open to the public, and we invite you to come out and support our veterans," a spokeswoman said.
Holy Trinity Philoptochos
having food sale Tuesday
STEUBENVILLE -- Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Philoptochos Society will have its next gyro sale on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The church is located at 300 S. Fourth St., Steubenville.
The gyros are $9 each with the kouroulakia being $8 a dozen. There also will be sweet bread, $9; grape leaves, three for $3.50; spanakopita, $3.50; bakalava, $3 each; and kourambiedes, $1.
Patrons may phone order to (740) 282-9835 or by Fax to (740) 282-2091. Allow a minimum of 20 minutes for all orders.
There is free delivery on orders of four or more gyros. Walk-ins also are welcomed.
Steubenville High School Class
of 1959 plans Jan. 11 meeting
STEUBENVILLE -- Alumni of Steubenville High School's Class of 1959 held their holiday luncheon Dec. 11 at Froehlich's Classic Corner in Steubenville.
Donna Snyder offered the blessing and gratitude for all present, for family and for those unable to attend.
Tom Maxwell read "The Origination of The Night Before Christmas." Deanna Nodianos provided the cake for dessert.
The next luncheon will be held Jan. 11 at Froehlich's Classic Corner, beginning at 12:30 p.m. "The status of 2023 New Year resolutions are welcomed," a spokesperson noted.

retirees to meet Jan. 12
STEUBENVILLE -- Retirees of Steubenville City School met for lunch at Dee Jay's BBQ Ribs and Grille in Weirton on Dec. 8.
The last collection for the group's charity for needy adults was held. Get well and Christmas cards were signed.
A Christmas gift activities was conducted.
The next lunch will be held Jan. 12 at the Ville in Steubenville, followed by Naples Spaghetti House in Steubenville on Feb. 9.

Jan. 17 meeting scheduled
for St. Agnes CWC members
MINGO JUNCTION -- Members of the St. Agnes Catholic Woman's Club met Dec. 13, beginning with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance led by President Theresa Madden.
The Rev. James Dunfee then led grace for the pot-luck dinnerm after which an abbreviated business meeting followed. Madden thanked Joanne Raha for taking over the position of treasurer.
Madden gave an update regarding pumpkin roll donations. Cash was donated by Jean Kovalan, Ed and Katie Grantonic, Jeannette Yanssens, Mary Ross, Karen Giuliani, Bill Siedle and Tony Colabella. Groceries were donated by Janet Pavlov, Karen Giuliani, and Debbie Riccardo, who donated all of the gluten-free flour.
Madden announced the names of new shut-ins, and members volunteered.
The next meeting will be held Jan. 17, the third Tuesday of the month. Hosts will be Dunfee and Debbie Riccardo.
Members then played a game called "No One Knows," guessing to whom a list of little-known facts about members, submitted by the members themselves, pertained.
After a white elephant gift exchange, the meeting ended with prayer.
Brooke County Public Library to screen films Jan. 12, Jan. 13
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will show the family film "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" at 5 p.m. Jan. 12 and the rated PG-13 romantic comedy "Ticket to Paradise" at noon Jan. 13.
Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch to the noon screening. Popcorn and bottled water will be provided at both.

branch announces new hours
FOLLANSBEE -- The Follansbee Branch of the Brooke County Public Library has new hours.
It will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
Tri-County Pastures for Profit workshop series being offered
STEUBENVILLE -- Learn all about management intensive grazing through Pastures for Profit classes being offered in Harrison, Jefferson and Carroll counties as a three-part series this year.
Anyone interested in pasture management and forages is welcome to join the course, and those new to livestock and hay production are encouraged to participate, explained Erika Lyon, agriculture and natural resources educator, Ohio State University Extension
Topics covered include management intensive grazing, goal-setting, improving soil fertility and forage growth, meeting animal needs, water quality, paddock design, grazing economics and year-round grazing.
The Pastures for Profit program is a long-standing collaboration between Ohio State University Extension, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Ohio Department of Agriculture, Eastern Ohio Grazing Council and the Ohio Forage and Grasslands Council.
The 2023 schedule for Pastures for Profit is as follows:
≤ Part I: Feb. 13, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Harrison County Fairgrounds Commercial Building, 550 Grant St., Cadiz -- Core Grazing Principles;
≤ Part II: Feb. 27, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Eastern Gateway Community College Lecture Hall, 4000 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville -- Science of Grazing; and
≤ Part III: March 13, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Carroll County Extension Office, 540 High St. NW, Carrollton -- Meeting Your Grazing Goals.
The cost of the course is $55 per person, which includes a meal for each session and a copy of the Pastures for Profit manual. Pre-registration is required by Feb. 10 by calling the Extension office at (740) 264-2212.

WVU Extension: Free seeds
for online survey participants
CHARLESTON -- Free garden seeds are available to West Virginia residents who fill out a short online survey.
The seeds are available through the Grow This: West Virginia Garden Challenge, a project of the West Virginia University Extension Family Nutrition Program.
"With the high cost of food right now, people can really benefit from learning how to grow their own food," said Kristin McCartney, WVU Extension assistant professor and public health specialist.
"Making sure that people have those skills -- and can pass them on to the next generation -- is essential for our communities to achieve long-term food security."
This year seeds will add color to home gardens with purple carrots, miniature multi-colored bell peppers and red kale.
The seeds are expected to arrive in mid-April.
OVBPW to meet Jan. 17

STEUBENVILLE -- The Ohio Valley Business and Professional Women will hold their next meeting on Jan. 17, beginning at 6 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the Main Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. The address is 407 S. Fourth St., Steubenville.
Sarita Asawa, the library's community outreach and programming coordinator, will be the speaker, providing an overview of the library system's services and programs.

New Cumberland Hall of Fame to induct three new members
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The New Cumberland Hall of Fame, created by Rob Stanley as a Boy Scout project to earn his Eagle Scout award, is making plans for its 32nd-annual event to induct three new members.
The induction of these new members will be held at the New Cumberland Christian Church on Court Street on Feb. 5, beginning at 2 p.m.
The ceremony is open to the public.
Inductees for 2023 are: Living, Dorothy Hawkes, and deceased, Emily Fields.
The Spirit of Scouting Award will be presented to Rob Littell.
Individuals wanting to nominate a New Cumberland resident to be considered for 2024 may do so by sending a letter in their own words as to why the person should be considered to Rick Greenwood, P.O. Box 185, New Cumberland.
