OOGEEP taking applications for 2023 scholarship program

GRANVILLE, OHIO — The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program, along with the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Foundation, is accepting applications for the 2023 scholarship program.

Students who are interested in pursuing careers in the natural gas and oil industry can qualify for a $1,000 scholarship. Applications will be accepted through March 1.

Scholarships are awarded to Ohio students interested in pursuing careers such as petroleum engineer, finance, equipment operator, mechanical engineer, welder and others. The scholarship can be used to attend an accredited college, university, technical or trade school. The student must maintain a gradepoint average of 2.5 or higher.

“Every year we are incredibly grateful to be able to assist young Ohioans in pursuing good paying careers in the natural gas and oil industry,” commented Shawn Toy, education and workforce development manager, Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program. “We can’t wait to meet our 2023 scholarship recipients and see all that they will accomplish,” he added.

OOGEEP is proud to support the next generation of leaders and workers in the natural gas and oil industry through its scholarship program, according to Toy. Since 2007, OOGEEP has awarded 599 scholarships to students pursuing careers in the natural gas and oil industry. These past winners have represented 74 colleges, universities, technical or trade schools and include 61 majors, degrees or certificate programs.

The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program is a nonprofit statewide education and public outreach program. Created in 1998, OOGEEP provides a variety of programs throughout the state of Ohio on behalf of Ohio’s natural gas and crude oil producers. The primary goal of these programs is to educate Ohio’s consumers and leaders by focusing on industry research, teacher workshops, scholarships, science fair, firefighter training, career and workforce development, landowner and guest speaker programs.

Quilting, sewing classes begin on Jan. 19 at Weirton church

WEIRTON — Quilting and sewing classes will begin on Jan. 19 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, located at 300 Three Springs Drive, Weirton.

The classes will be held two weeks each month , and the hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We welcome all levels of sewers and quilters from beginning to experienced and will teach those who would like to learn to sew and/or quilt,” a spokesperson explained. “We invite experienced quilters to come share their knowledge to all of us.”

Indoor flea market Saturday

at Weirton Legion Post

WEIRTON — The Weirton American Legion Post No. 10, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, will host a fundraiser flea market.

It will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature 20 tables offering everything from baked goods to discounted Christmas items and vintage items. “There’s something for everyone,” a spokesperson noted.

STEUBENVILLE — If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to volunteer more, Urban Mission Ministries welcomes you to learn about what volunteer opporunities it has available.

Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary reviews 2022 events

WEIRTON — The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary members held their meeting Monday with President Shirley Brecht presiding.

Marcy Spano gave the prayer and Barbara Glessner provided names of those who are ill.

Brecht led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call was conducted by Vice President Darlene Kemp. Spano gave the sunshine report and read the minutes of the December meeting, which were approved as read. Brecht presented the treasurer’s report, which also was approved as read. An audit will be done in March.The group’s new adopted veteran for 2023 is James Beeman.

The meeting included a review of accomplishments the auxiliary achieved during 2022, including adopting a veteran; lap blankets for veterans at the Weirton Geriatric Center nursing home as well as Christmas stockings for the veterans; a donation to the Community Bread Basket; the auxiliary’s no-bake bake sale; an ice cream social in July and August; Easter baskets for veterans at Weirton Geriatric Center; the presentation of a wreath on Memorial Day; an auxiliary dinner at Giovanni’s Restaurant on Veterans Day; and a new member in Debbie White, who joined the group in December.

January birthdays were acknowledged. It was noted the group has lap blankets that have been donated to give to a veterans association or a nursing home.

Members were reminded that dues are dues.

Spano won the 50-50 drawing and donated it back to the club treasury.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the VFW in Weirton.
