Irondale UMC drive-through soup sale set for Wednesday
IRONDALE -- The Irondale United Methodist Church, located on Grant Street, Irondale, is having a drive-through soup sale on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The soup men includes vegetable, broccoli, chicken noodle, wedding, bean and chili. The cost is $3 for a pint and $6 for a quart.

Historical groups to present lecture on Dr. Alfred Hughes
WHEELING -- The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable, Friends of Wheeling and Genealogical Society will host a lecture on Dr. Alfred Hughes given by Jeanne Finstein on Jan. 30 at the Ohio County Public Library auditorium, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Hughes was a prominent Wheeling physician in 1862 and gained notoriety for his political views during the Civil War.
Finstein is an officer in all three organizations. She is a former math teacher at Wheeling Park High School, worked at the NASA Classroom of the Future is part owner of Polyhedron Learning Media Inc. and is a frequent lecturer on topics on historical interest.
The lecture is open to the public and free of charge, although donations will be accepted.

WVU Extension: Free seeds
for online survey participants
CHARLESTON -- Free garden seeds are available to West Virginia residents who fill out a short online survey.
The seeds are available through the Grow This: West Virginia Garden Challenge, a project of the West Virginia University Extension Family Nutrition Program.
"With the high cost of food right now, people can really benefit from learning how to grow their own food," said Kristin McCartney, WVU Extension assistant professor and public health specialist.
"Making sure that people have those skills -- and can pass them on to the next generation -- is essential for our communities to achieve long-term food security."
This year seeds will add color to home gardens with purple carrots, miniature multi-colored bell peppers and red kale.
The seeds are expected to arrive in mid-April.

how to make a 'crazy' quilt
NEW CUMBERLAND -- For individuals who have ever wondered what exactly makes a quilt "crazy," they should be sure to attend the next meeting of the Community Educational Outreach Service at the Hancock County Senior Services Center on Gas Valley Road on Feb. 1, according to organizers.
Popular from the late 1800s through the early 1900s, these one-of-a-kind quilts featured irregular shapes and meticulous embroidery.
The meeting will be called to order at noon, following a chicken noodle soup and sandwich lunch from the senior center's kitchen. The quilt lesson will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. Presented by CEOS volunteer Virginia Lawson the lesson will examine the history and creation of the iconic crazy quilt.
As always, the public is invited to attend the meeting. "There is no charge for the lesson or the friendship and camaraderie you will experience, but if you wish to join the club for lunch, the normal senior center fee of $6, which includes dessert and a drink, will apply," a spokesperson explained.

Sweethearts Dinner and Dance
Feb. 11 at Steubenville Legion
STEUBENVILLE -- The Ladies Auxiliary of the Steubenville American Legion Argonne Post 33 in Steubenville welcomes all American Legion members and their guests to the Sweetheart Dinner and Dance happening Feb. 11.
It will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Legion located at 808 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.
The cost is $10 per person with signup and payment needed by a reservation deadline of Feb. 6.
The dinner will be served from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and include pasta, meatball, salad, bread and butter, fruits and dessert.
The Russ Buchanan Band will be playing a variety of country and rock music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The festivities will include a 50-50 drawing in addition to a gift card drawing and other special drawing.
Brooke Library cooking club to share 30-minute recipes
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library's Cook by the Book Recipe Club will meet at noon on Friday to share 30-minute recipes.
All adults are welcome to the free club, which chooses a different theme each month.
