Steubenville Kiwanis seeking
teams for trivia competition
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville Kiwanis Club is continuing to recruit teams to participate in the 11th-annual Trivia Team competition that will be held March 11 in the commons area of Steubenville High School.
Instead of being an evening event as in past years, this year's festivities will be an afternoon affair getting under way at 2 p.m.
Teams will once again compete for cash prizes and bragging rights as part of an environment that will include a 50-50 drawing, a Chinese auction and a live auction.
The cost for a team to participate -- with a team meaning up to 10 people -- is $120. They can register by contacting Tom Timmons, club secretary-treasurer and event chair, by phone at (740) 314-9574 or by e-mail to timmons@wesbanco.com. The deadline to register is March 7.
That also is the contact information for anyone who would like to donate items for the Chinese auction or the live auction.
Teams are advised to bring their own snacks.
Paul Brandt, Joe Corabi, Ray Agresta and Peggy Pugh will serve as judges.
The competition was not held in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic and got rescheduled last year because of a March snowstorm -- more trivia, offers Timmons, whose sister, Sue Busler, prepares the questions and serves as event emcee. Busler hails from Maryville, Ill., just outside St. Louis, and brought the idea for such a fundraiser to the area through her brother nearly a decade ago.
"It's a great tradition," Timmons said of the contest that consists of 10 rounds of questions in categories such as history, sports, science, geography, current events and entertainment with a possible score of 100 points per round and a grand total of 1,000 points.
"She'll make up all the questions again, and it's a good team competition. Everyone's pretty competitive," Timmons added.
Proceeds from the event benefit community projects undertaken by the club.
Easter gala trunk-or-treat
at Follansbee church
FOLLANSBEE -- Follansbee United Methodist Church, located at 1002 Virginia Ave., Follansbee, will be hosting an Easter gala trunk-or-treat.
It will be held April 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
New Cumberland Lions Club discusses various projects
NEW CUMBERLAND -- President Dorothy Hawkes presided when the New Cumberland Lions club met Feb. 14.
Patty Burgess offered the prayer, and Jeanne Cox led the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes were accepted as read and the treasurer's report was placed on file for audit.
Correspondence was received from Leader Dogs for the Blind and a thank-you from the W.Va. Lions Sight Conservation Foundation for the donation given in the name of James Gillespie. Information was received from the District 29L district governor concerning the upcoming district elections.
The Chester Lions Club contacted New Cumberland Lions Club to discuss the upcoming Camp Horseshoe nominations and cost sharing. New Cumberland Lions, Chester Lions and Newell Lions work together to cover the cost of attendance for two students. The Chester club will contact the local high school to ask for students who might be interested in this opportunity, it was announced.
Cox has distributed the child safety seat identification stickers from the W.Va. Department of Highways to local entities in the area that work with children. They have been well received, Cox noted. "To obtain stickers, contact your pediatrician, Family Resource Network, daycare, etc., or contact CPS Coordinator Amy Boggs at Amy.M.Boggs@wv.go," Cox added. If a crash should occur, and the parent or caregiver is unconscious or fatally injured, these stickers ensure rapid identification of small children in car seats or boosters in the event of an emergency. The parent or caregiver is encouraged to fill out the information on the sticker and place it on the right front corner (child's right) under the cushion or center back of the child's safety seat. The two small round stickers should be visibly placed on both sides of the seat.
Cox has a vision screening scheduled for today for students at the New Manchester Elementary School. The next regular meeting will be held Tuesday at the New Cumberland Christian Church.
Library offers story hours
for children every Monday
FOLLANSBEE -- The Brooke County Public Library offers story hours for children, ages 2-5, and their caregivers each Monday at its Follansbee branch.
They include a craft, games and a snack. Those interested in participating in the free programs should register by calling Kim Harless, their coordinator, at (304) 737-1551 ext. 106.
Series of free business-related seminars offered in Wellsburg
WELLSBURG -- The Ohio Valley Business Alliance is hosting a series of free business-related seminars presented by the West Virginia Small Business Center at the Brooke County Public Library.
Held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., they will cover such topics as understanding financial statements on Monday, pre-planning a business startup on March 6 and business financing on March 13.
There also will be an online seminar from noon to 1 p.m. March 15 and focused on using online brand building to boost marketing and sales.
Brooke Salvation Army, Almost Heaven Dentistry plan event
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Salvation Army has teamed with Almost Heaven Family Dentistry of Wellsburg to hold a food giveaway for Brooke County residents from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 17 at the Salvation Army Service Center at 401 Commerce St.

Weirton American Legion Post hosting 'Fish Fry Fridays'
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Post 10, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, will be having Fish Fry Friday until April 7.
The times will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Dinners, which include fish (haddock), fries and cole slaw, are $11. A fish sandwich is $8. Zucchini fries and buffalo chips also are available.
The fish fry is open to the public.
Pottery Addition VFD hosting Lunch with the Easter Bunny
POTTERY ADDITION -- The Pottery Addition Volunteer Fire Department, located at 448 Kingsdale Road, Steubenville, will be hosting Lunch with the Easter Bunny on April 1 at 11 a.m.
The cost is $10 per child and is for those ages 10 and younger.
The fee includes lunch with the Easter Bunny, a craft, an egg hunt with prizes, an entry drawing and extra prize eggs.
