Band concerts on Sunday
at Steubenville High School
support trip to Disney World
STEUBENVILLE -- With spring in the air, so comes music as Steubenville High School and Harding Middle School's bands tune up for seasonal performances.
The SHS Concert Band will conduct its spring show on Sunday at 3 p.m. while Harding will host its "Disney Spectacular Spring Concert" on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. Both will be held in the SHS auditorium and are free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the high school band's upcoming trip to Disney World.
Doors for the SHS show open at 2 p.m. and a treat this year is an appearance by the Tri-State Community Band.
Rosalind Thacker, band director, said 88 students in grades nine through 12 will showcase a variety of melodies while members will be recognized for their dedication. Students will perform such pieces as "To Dance with Storm Clouds," "High Voltage," "Mad Dash," "Fuerza Furiosa" and the apropos "A Disney March Spectacular." Thacker said the latter includes a medley of popular tunes from "It's A Small World" to "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and fittingly ties in with the band's trek to Florida during the next few months.
"On May 7-12, a portion of the Big Red Band will be traveling to Orlando to march in a once-in-a-lifetime performance at the Magic Kingdom," she added. "We could not be more proud of the students who chose to complete this year's journey as members of the Big Red Band and appreciate their dedication to our organization."
She also thanked participants' families for supporting the trip, as well as all of the generous donors and fundraisers who helped make it happen. Donations from the concert will help purchase Disney T-shirts and offset any outstanding expenses for the journey.
"Our four-day tour will include Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Disney Springs, Typhoon Lagoon and a 2:30 p.m. performance at the Magic Kingdom on May 11," Thacker continued. "We would like to thank our community and fans for their support and donations during our preparation for this trip. We could not have done this without their generosity."
Spectators also can enjoy the Tri-State Community Band, which will perform songs including "Men of Ohio," "Shenandoah," "An American in Paris" and "Emperata Overture."
The band, which is under the direction of Zeke Paulowski, began more than four decades ago as the Toronto High School Alumni Band but evolved into the Toronto Community Band and its current incarnation. Volunteer members hail from throughout the area and range from high school and college students to retired music educators, professional musicians and other musical talents.
Harding's performance will feature approximately 180 middle school students in grades five through eight and include the HMS Jazz Band. Band Director Rick Hicks said this year's Disney theme will involve myriad movie tunes and also supports the trip to Orlando.
"There will be a donation bucket to help support the band activities. Donations will help support the high school trip to Disney in May. There will be a couple surprises," Hicks continued. "The high school band does a Disney trip every four years. With the support of the middle school concert, the favor will return to them in 2027 as they plan to make the same trip."
Hancock County Museum
Commission holds meeting
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The regular meeting of the Hancock County Museum Commission was held March 1 at the museum with President Vivian Weigel presiding and leading in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Attending, in addition to Weigel, were, Lois Carpini, Marcus Trelaine, Kathy Beagle, John Speerhas, Alice Mitchell and Doris Cameron.
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as mailed by Secretary Doris Cameron.
Treasurer Marcus Trelaine presented the financial report.
Under old business, Weigel reported on updating the membership list.
In new business, Weigel thanked Speerhas, and Beagle for taking down Christmas decorations. Correspondence included a thank-you note from the West Virginia Humanity Council for the group's membership dues of $30 and a note of thanks from the Top of West Virginia Bureau for the Christmas tea served at the museum in conjunction with the tour of the facility. A note was received from the neighboring Catholic church regarding the annual renewal of the parking lot agreement with a request for a monthly schedule of planned activities.
Two out-of-town families have requested tours of the museum, one in March, the other in April.
It was noted that temporary repairs have been made. A window replacement estimate is anticipated. A grant application is to be submitted for the window project.
Plans are being made to continue the summer lecture series beginning In May.
The Chamber of Commerce of Southern Columbiana County and surrounding areas has extended an invitation to the museum to attend its meeting on May 25 at the newly renovated Masonic Temple in East Liverpool, it was announced.
The next meeting is scheduled for April 5 at the museum, beginning at 2 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend.
Boy Scout Troop 20 is having fundraiser breakfast Saturday
RICHMOND -- Boy Scout Troop 20 will be holding a fundraiser pancake breakfast on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the fellowship hall of Richmond Methodist Church, located at 112 S. Sugar St., Richmond.
The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee. Cost is by donation.
There also will be free pictures with the Easter Bunny taken or attendees can take their own.

meeting of Toronto Seniors
TORONTO -- Judy Bickler opened the St. Patrick's Day-themed meeting of the Toronto Senior Citizens -- the first meeting of 2023 -- extending a special thanks to all members who helped, including kitchen committee volunteers Karen Krause, Mary Koth, Bill Landis, Faye Jones, Linda Livingstone, Barbara Losey, Barbara Lyons, Laura Mamula, Terry Mamula, Bill Shipe, Elizabeth Shipe and Karen Thornton.
Arlene Obertance led the group in a prayer of thanks and the Pledge of Allegiance. The treasurer's report was given by Rosemary Bonofine and approved. Revised bylaws were read and approved.
Peggy Miller, secretary, reported on the January and February officers' meetings, the need for greeters at the door for meetings, the need for an auditor and discussing becoming tax exempt. The new date for the Christmas dinner will be Dec. 15.
Members were reminded that June is dues renewal month. Dinner checks are to be mailed to Patty Smith by the first week of the month.

It was announced that the Toronto Sunrise Seniors are organizing a trip for April 26. The bus will leave the Toronto Junior-Senior High School stadium parking lot at 11 a.m., stop for lunch at the Golden Corral at Robinson Township and involve three hours at either the Meadows Casino or shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall. The group will travel to Canonsburg to the Sarris Chocolate Factory for shopping and ice cream. Anyone interested can contact Barbara Pritts at (740) 537-4957.
'Praise is What I Do!' theme
of Shiloh program on Sunday
WEIRTON -- Shiloh Apostolic Church, located at 3000 Weir Ave., Weirton, will present "Praise is What I Do"! on Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m.
The program features various Ohio Valley talents, including music, liturgical dances and other spiritual expressions. The public is invited to attend.

HOPEDALE -- The United Mine Workers of America Local No. 1304 will meet April 1 at the Hopedale American Legion, located on Rabbit Road, Hopedale.
Breakfast is at 9:30 a.m., and the meeting starts at 10 a.m.
