book sale on May 6-7
STEUBENVILLE -- The Friends of the Library will have its first fundraiser, hosting a two-day book sale on May 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Main Library of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County located at 407 S. Fourth St., Steubenville.
The sale will be held in the garage and the lobby at the Main Branch.
"We are offering early admission to the sale on May 7 only at 9 9 a.m. for Friends of the Library members," a group spokesperson explained.
"The library hosted this sale last year and had a great turnout and we have even more to offer this year in terms of the number of books and other items for sale so we expect this to be a wonderful event for the community," commented Christine Holt, a member of the group's steering committee.
Books will cost 25 cents each or patrons can buy a Friends' tote for $10 and fill it up with as many books as they can. "We also will be selling CDs, DVDs, vinyl records and video games. There will be a bake sale, food trucks and a drawing for a chance to win a reading-themed quilt.
The Friends of the Library is a nonprofit group with the goal to support all of the library branches within the PLSJ system. The effort will involve fundraising, advocacy, volunteer coordination and expansion of services.
To become a member of the Friends of the Library, send an e-mail to plsjfriends@gmail.com or contact PLSJ. Membership costs $20 per year. The group is holding a membership drive on April 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Schiappa Branch.
"All are welcome to attend to learn more about how to get involved or to sign up to become a member," Holt added.
History Alive! set for April 27 will feature 'Gabriel Arthur'
WELLSBURG -- The Friends of the Brooke County Public Library will present a History Alive! program of the West Virginia Humanities Council at 7 p.m. April 27.
The program will feature Doug Wood as Gabriel Arthur, who is believed to have been the first white man to see the Kanawha Valley in 1674 while accompanied by a group of American Indians he had befriended.
Wood had been sent from Fort Henry in present-day Petersburg, Va. to explore western lands and trade with the Indians.
As with other History Alive! programs, Wood will present a monologue and answer questions from attendees first in character, then as himself.

National Library Week to be
observed in Brooke County
WELLSBURG -- The staff of the Brooke County and Follansbee libraries remind everyone that April 23-29 is National Library Week.
They encourage everyone, especially those who haven't visited the libraries in a while, to stop by and learn of the many services and programs they offer.
Library director Alex Schneider said, "Libraries are welcoming spaces that bring communities together for entertainment, education, and connection through book clubs, storytimes, movie nights, crafting classes, lectures, and more. Brooke County Public Libraries offers a wide array of programs, classes and resources.

Toronto church to observe
National Day of Prayer May 4
TORONTO -- Crossroads North River Church has organized a National Day of Prayer event involving several area pastors and set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 4.
The event will begin with a prayer walk from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the city's Gazebo Commons on North Third Street, where prayers for the nation, its government, first responders and others will follow. There also will be live music.
Unionport community center fundraiser breakfast Saturday
UNIONPORT -- The Wayne Township Community Center in Unionport will be hosting a fundraiser breakfast on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The menu will feature pancakes and sausage, scrambled eggs and toast, sausage gravy and biscuits and drinks.
Cost is by donation, and all proceeds benefit the center's upkeep.
Railroaders invited to attend
breakfast meeting Thursday
CHESTER -- All railroaders are invited to attend a breakfast meeting at E.J.'s Restaurant, located at 807 Carolina Ave., set for Thursday at 11 a.m.
All retired and current railroaders and crafts are welcome to attend the get-togethers that are held on the third Thursday of the month at 11 a.m. at E.J.'s.

Starwatching event Friday at Brooke Hills Cardinal Shelter
WELLSBURG -- The SMART Centre will hold a starwatching event at dusk on Friday at Brooke Hills Park's Cardinal Shelter.
Pending weather conditions, it holds star watches there on the third Friday of each month.
