Weirton Legion Auxiliary breakfast fundraiser Saturday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Auxiliary will be having a fundraising breakfast on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the post hall, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton.
The all-you-can-eat meal will be scrambled eggs, sausage, fried potatoes, pancakes, coffee and orange juice. The cost is $8 per person, $5 for those under 10, and free to those under 5.
"Our breakfast is open to the public, and we invite you to support our veterans with us," a spokesperson noted.
Historic Fort Steuben program
by 'Fifth Border State' author
STEUBENVILLE -- Historic Fort Steuben, located at 120 S. Third St., Steubenville, will host a program by Scott A. Mackenzie, author of "The Fifth Border State: Slavery, Emancipation and the Formation of West Virginia, 1829-1872."
The presentation regarding his book about the beginnings of West Virginia will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday.
Mackenzie received his education at the University of Manitoba, Queens College of the City University of New York, the University of Calgary and Auburn University. He lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but has been fascinated with the American Civil War for years.
"I started my research in 2005 when I chose it for my master's thesis," Mackenzie explained. "I selected Kanawha County for its large, enslaved population and extensive source base. The results surprised me -- the county with the largest slave population in northwestern Virginia became the most radicalized in the region on issues like statehood and emancipation. My dissertation, and now book, expanded this approach to the entire region. I believe that my conclusions will overturn the standard account of how West Virginia became a state," Mackenzie noted.
"I made two long research trips to West Virginia and Virginia. The first came in 2006 when I used the archives in Charleston, the West Virginia Regional History Collection in Morgantown and the Library of Virginia in Richmond. I returned for three months in 2012 when I revisited Morgantown and Richmond. I also used the state archives' wonderful website which contains numerous excellent sources," he added.
Family and Friends Day
April 30 at Calvary Church
STEUBENVILLE -- Calvary Community Missionary Baptist Church located at 511 Woodlawn Road, Steubenville, will be having its Family and Friends Day on April 30, beginning at 11 a.m.
There will be special guests with performances by the Echoes of Calvary and Christian rapper Albert (True Murry) performing his original songs "Conversation" and "After The Rain."
"Calvary Community Missionary Baptist Church is inviting the community out that Sunday for this great worship experience," a spokesperson said.
Calvary will be serving lunch immediately after the service.
May 9 next scheduled meeting for retired teachers association
TORONTO -- The Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association will meet May 9 at the Riverview United Methodist Church in Toronto
The business meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. Guest speakers will be June Logan, Ohio Retired Teachers Association liaison, offering updates and Karry Trotter from the Association Member Benefits Advisers providing an overview of benefits available.
Larry Coleman will present rewards for the top JCRTA volunteers from 2022. Canned fruit will be collected for the Salvation Army.
Luncheon reservations are due April 28 to Ann Wiley. Checks should be made payable to JCRTA.
Any current or retired teachers are invited to join JCRTA.
Spring flea market scheduled
for Saturday at Brooke Hills
WELLSBURG -- Brooke Hills Park will hold its spring flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
There will be a variety of vendors, food for sale and music.
In the event of rain, it will be held Sunday.
Evening story hour will focus on 'Tree Full of Wonder'
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will hold an evening story hour, based on "Tree Full of Wonder" and led by Kim Harless, at 6 p.m. April 26.

Brilliant UMC schedules
strawberry festival June 4
BRILLIANT -- Brilliant United Methodist Church, located at 525 LaBelle St., Brilliant, will hold its annual strawberry festival fundraiser on June 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Entertainment will be provided by the Ron Retzer Trio. There will be food and strawberries and ice cream.
Libraries to close early April 25
The Brooke County Library will close at 4 p.m. April 25 and the Follansbee Library will close at 3:45 p.m. that day so staff may attend training.
