STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville Kiwanis Club held its 11th-annual team trivia competition on March 11 at Steubenville High School with 16 teams participating, but only one claiming the No. 1 "we-won!" bragging rights.
That team was Hunkler's Heroes, whose members were in second place going in to the 10th and final round, but were able to overtake the Pride of the Red Knights from T-Town to claim the $500 first prize, according to Tom Timmons, the Kiwanis club secretary-treasurer and event chair.
The Red Knights garnered the second-place prize of $250, while the third-place prize of $100 went to the Mingo Windians.
Hunkler's Heroes was a team from the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County named after Bill Hunkler, a former team member from Barnesville who died a few years ago.
"It was a very exciting event," Timmons commented of the fundraiser from which proceeds benefit community projects undertaken by the club.
The contest consists of 10 rounds of questions in categories such as history, sports, science, geography, current events and entertainment with a possible score of 100 points per round and a grand total of 1,000 points.
Timmons' sister, Sue Busler, prepares the questions and serves as event emcee. Busler hails from Maryville, Ill., just outside St. Louis, and brought the idea for such a fundraiser to the area through her brother more than a decade ago.
One category -- "Dead in the Water" -- featured questions about all things water, for example. One of them was: What first lady once said, "A woman is like a tea bag -- you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water."
The answer? Eleanore Roosevelt.
Another category was "Does Anybody Really Know What time It Is?" One of its questions was: What is the term for one trillionth of a second?
The answer? A picosecond.
The Kiwanis members already planning for the 12th-annual competition. It will be held on the second Saturday in March in 2024.
