WEIRTON -- The West Virginia Disciples Women groups sponsored a drive to help the Victims of Domestic Violence housed in domestic violence shelters throughout West Virginia.
The First Christian Church of Weirton Disciples Women asked members of the congregation to bring undergarments and feminine hygiene products to its meeting in March.
The donated items were distributed in two parts. First, President Janet Rymer and Secretary Karen Blanc traveled to New Martinsville on March 18 to the "Never Alone" spring event held at the First Christian Church there. Donations were accepted, and speakers gave informative talks about ways to help women and children who feel alone as they seek shelter from violent situations.
Secondly, Connie Norwood, treasurer of the Disciples Women group, presented a large amount of the donated items to the local domestic violence shelter in Weirton. Sarah Hilditch, a Victims of Crime Assistance court advocate with the Lighthouse domestic violence awareness center and shelter, accepted the items from First Christian Church and said the shelter always needs underwear and feminine hygiene products.
All women are welcome to attend the Disciples Women meetings. The next meeting will be the Mother's Day event on May 11, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Newly organized here in 2022, Disciples Women groups are based on the verse from Micah -- "practice justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God."
The group has tried to rectify the injustice of poverty and violence by donating clothing to the Weirton Elementary students and to the victims of domestic violence, a group spokeswoman noted.
