The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will present two lectures at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday inside the court room of historic West Virginia Independence Hall.
The first will feature Judi Hendrickson and Jeanne Finstein, who will portray Dr. Eliza Hughes and her sister-in-law Mary Hughes, who was married to Eliza's brother, Dr. Alfred Hughes. Many in the Hughes family were ardent secessionists during the Civil War. Eliza's and Mary's recollections provide an intimate -- and occasionally -- look at Wheeling life for southern supporters during the conflict.
Hendrickson and Finstein are supporters of local history and partake in numerous programs sponsored by the roundtable, Independence Hall, Friends of Wheeling and genealogical organizations.
After discovering hundreds of letters written during the Civil War, the author discovers the story of two brothers' Civil War narratives that recognize their fighting in battles from the Peninsular Campaign to Cedar Creek.
Author Carleton Young, a resident of Pittsburgh, has earned numerous degrees. He has taught at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon. His lecture will begin at 11 a.m. The lectures are open to the public and free of charge.
