Jefferson/Harrison Master Gardener Volunteers Plant Sale

STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson and Harrison Master Gardener Volunteers will hold a plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon ­-- or until sold out, on Saturday in the parking lot near J.C. Penny and the former Dicks Sporting Goods at the Fort Steuben Mall.

A variety of plants will be on hand, including flowers, vegetables, herbs and ornamental grasses. Fact sheets with information about each plant will be available for participants as well.

Cash, checks or credit cards will be accepted methods of payment.

In addition, organizers noted there will also be a plant sale going on at Gabriel Brother's parking lot, located at 211 Three Springs Drive in Weirton. The sale, which coincides with the Steubenville plant sale, will be held by the Tri-State Master Gardener Volunteers.

Historian to host book signing

WEIRTON -- Local Historian Paul J. Zuros, will be holding a book signing at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center. Zuros's work entitled, "Historic Tales of the Upper Ohio Valley," is a collection of stories from the region's past, chronicling the people, places and events that have shaped the area over the years.

The museum, located at 3149 Main St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, with Zuros giving a presentation prior to his signing books for the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase copies of the book at the museum.

"Zuros, who has spent many years researching and writing about the history of the Upper Ohio Valley, brings his deep knowledge and passion for the subject to every page," officials commented, adding he will be available to chat with readers about the stories within his book during the signing.

The event is open to the public and admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat for the presentation. For information, contact the museum at (304) 723-3135.

Shiloh Apostolic sponsors prayer breakfast, Saturday

WEIRTON -- The Shiloh Apostolic Faith Ushers will sponsor a prayer breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, located at 3000 Weir Ave., Weirton. The theme will be, "Feed Your Body and Soul."

Helen Jeter will serve as mistress of ceremony and the speaker will be Rebecca "Tish" Turner.

The cost for the event is $14 for adults and $8 for children 10 and under. The menu will consist of chicken and waffles, turkey or pork sausage, eggs, grits, toast, fruit, coffee, juice and water.

Harrison Coal & Reclamation Historical Park Dinner Auction

HOPEDALE -- The Harrison Coal & Reclamation Historical Park will hold its 29th annual dinner auction beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Hopedale Fire Department, located at 103 Firehouse Lane, Hopedale. Doors open at 4 p.m. with dinner being held at 5 p.m. Following the buffet dinner, there will be a talk from Sam Bennett Jr. about the Coshocton County Coal Miners Memorial. The auction will take place after the discussion at approximately 7 p.m.

The event will include door prizes, basket drawings, a silent auction and the live auction which conducted by Rick Keffer Auctions.

According to organizers, the Dave Barnhouse print titled, "Passing Time," is going to be available at auction, as well as books, mining-related items and handmade, wood-framed pictures of old equipment.

This non-profit group was formed in the 1990s to preserve the coal mining heritage of Harrison County. They have a collection of archives, machinery and memorabilia relating to the mining, agriculture and transportation fields.

Teacher's Sorority holds annual picnic

UNIONPORT -- Ohio Beta Alpha Teacher's Sorority held its annual picnic May 2 at the Unionport Recreation Center. The day consisted of a variety of picnic foods and was followed by the group's last sorority meeting until September, at a site still to be announced.

President Linda Lenzi welcomed members and presided over the business meeting, while Secretary Joyce Cammilletti called roll and read the approved minutes from the April meeting. Treasurer Teresa Nicholson presented her approved report, after which Scholarship Chairman Sharon Patterson exclaimed her committee has selected the recipient of the annual ADK scholarship. That winner's name will be released at a later date, according to officials.

Sue Davidson, ways and means chairman, discussed the group's upcoming mum sale, which will be held Sept. 16 in conjunction with the Eastern Gateway Community College's Garage Sale. If members want to pre-order mums, they may send Davidson a check prior to Monday. The cost is $10 for a 9-inch pot; $14 for an 11-inch pot; and $18 for a hanging basket. Colors available are red, orange, yellow and purple, with a limited number of white.

Susan Nolan, past state president, presented the group with a, "Membership Award," which was given to the club at the State ADK Convention. Nolan then read a memorial piece, which was also presented at the state convention, that honored deceased member Clara Joyce.

During the day's events, money was collected and will be donated to the AIM Women's Center, The Sycamore Center and the Indian Creek and Toronto food pantries.
