Steubenville Saddle Club opens season with show this Sunday
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville Saddle Club is preparing fo the opening of its 2023 show season with the first show on Sunday at the club grounds, located at located at 8675 state Route 152 N., Richmond.
Open shows begin at 9 a.m. and consist of halter and showmanship, driving, English equitation and pleasure, Western horsemanship and pleasure, ranch pleasure, trail and contesting, the latter of which does not begin before 3 p.m. All shows are open to the public, and there is a concession stand.
The other show dates are June 2, July 16 and Sept. 10 at the club grounds and all of them beginning at 9 a.m.
The club's monthly meeting will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse.
Club officers are Zach Murray, president; from Murray and Wedlake, are Ashley Conley, vice president; Cathy Hickle, treasurer; Marlene Lamantia, show secretary; Robin Wedlake, points secretary; Emily Lamantia, secretary; and Allison Boyd, public relations.
Membership fees are $30 for a family; $20, single; and $15, youth. Fees for sponsorships or memberships can be made out to the Steubenville Saddle Club and mailed to SSC, P.O. East Springfield Community
Center having dinner May 11
EAST SPRINGFIELD -- The East Springfield Community Recreation and Service Center will host a fundraiser dinner from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 11.
The menu will be baked steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, dessert, bread and a drink. Patrons can dine in or get take-out. The phone number is (740) 543-3700. The cost is $10.

CWU Weirton Unit to mark May Friendship Day Friday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Unit of Church Women United will celebrate May Friendship Day on Friday at 11 a.m. at Oakland Presbyterian Church, 30 Swearingen Road, Weirton.
A program titled "Legacy of Love and Care" will be presented. Gerri Harbaugh is program director. Lunch will be served by the women of Oakland Presbyterian Church.
The service project for the meeting is the collection of personal hygiene items such as shampoo, conditioners, combs, brushes, deodorants and lotions for the Lighthouse shelter.
The program is open for the public to attend.
Fill-the-Truck diaper drive welcomes local donations
CADIZ -- A Fill-the-Truck diaper drive coordinated by the Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank is under way with one Harrison County site welcoming local participation.
The Ending Diaper Need and Lovin' It with McDonald's will host a collection site on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the McDonald's located at 663 Lincoln Ave., Cadiz.
The collection is of all diaper sizes and wipes with the most needed sizes being 4 to 7 and pull-ups. The Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank serves babies and toddlers in Stark, Tuscarawas, Carroll, Harrison, Wayne and Medina counties.

Hancock CEOS organizing Paint 'n' Snack for May 20
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Senior Services Center, located at 647 Gas Valley Road, New Cumberland, will be the venue for a Paint 'n' Snack event, hosted by the Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service, on May 20, beginning at 6 p.m.
The cost will be $35 and includes all materials and snacks. "This is a great opportunity for an evening of fun with friends or family and would even make a nice Mother's Day or birthday gift," a CEOS spokesperson noted. "We'll be doing a painting of a summer sunset over water with silhouetted grasses in the foreground."

'Slapdash' improv show offers some family-friend fun May 19
WEIRTON -- Weir High School's Drama Club will present "Slapdash! 7" on May 19 at 7 p.m.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All tickets are $10 at the door.
"Slapdash! 7" marks the club's seventh-annual improv show in which the entire performance is unscripted.
"Often, the actors and actresses rely on funny suggestions from the audience to supply the characters, setting and basic premise for each scene," a spokesperson explained.
Corey E. Miller, language arts and drama teacher, is directing and hosting the event. Miller sponsors the school's drama club and thespian troupe.
"Slapdash!" stars student improvisers competing for points. The cast consists of Tanner Finsley, Matt Jagela, Logan Wagner, Brianna Swain, Jason Lipovich, Leila Schwer and Saavy Swidowski.
This event is family-friendly, and it will leave you in stitches," the spokesperson said of one-night-only performance.
Fidelis Gamma Chapter to
have birthday party meeting
WEIRTON -- The Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Women's Educators Organization met April 20 at Eat 'n Park in Weirton with 12 members attending.
President Diane Higgins presided at the meeting, where she welcomed members, read an inspirational reading and gave a blessing for the meal.
Secretary Ruth Fuller read the minutes from the March 2 meeting, which were approved. Margo Polk's form for altruistic hours, monetary and nonmonetary items were recorded. Treasurer Carolyn Allison gave the financial report.
Higgins requested members read the chapter bylaws and amendments for Alpha Delta Kappa, all of which were unanimously approved.
Scholarship Chairman Liz Pugh reported that students are applying and additional applications are anticipated.
Higgins presented a fraternity education report, asking each member to recall who had invited them to join the organization. Member shared about their sponsors.
Taken under review was a suggestion from Allison that the chapter consider adding the Christian school to the scholarship list next year.
Fuller and Higgins shared information on two possible locations for future meetings to be held.
Allison reminded members that the May meeting will be a birthday party and birthday money for the year will be collected. Each member will pay 10 cents for each year of her birthday.
April birthdays were recognized. Donna Durkin presented pansies as a door prize, which were won by Ruth Fuller, Lola Bender and Twinkle Smith.
Durkin and Margo Polk served as hostesses for the meeting. May hostesses will be Bonnie Queses and Nancy Conley.
The next meeting will be held at noon on Thursday at Aloha Delights in Weirton.
The meeting adjourned with the singing of "The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa."
Pre-Mother's Day dinner

Taking Steps to End Elder Abuse 5K Run/Walk June 10
STEUBENVILLE -- Jim Wood Park in Steubenville's West End will be the setting on June 10 for the Taking Steps to End Elder Abuse 5K Run and Walk.
The event is being held in observance of Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is June 15, according to Marie Holt of Jefferson County Job and Family Services, Adult Protective Services.
"One in 10 seniors 60 years and older suffers from some type of elder abuse," noted Holt, who explained that Adult Protective Services and the Jefferson County Health Department are partnering on the June 10 event where proceeds will benefit Urban Mission's senior food box program.
There will be a 1K Kids Run beginning at 9 a.m.; the adult 5K run starting at 9:20 a.m.; and the 5K walk getting under way at 9:25 a.m.
Same-day registration is from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

There is a flier QR code for people to register. There will be T-shirts included for the first 100 people who sign up.
