The May meeting of the Jefferson Township Historical Society will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the white church building located on Fire Road in Eldersville. The church is across from the fire hall with the GPS address of 11 Fire Road, Burgettstown, Pa., according to officials.
President Diane Huggins will be speaking at the meeting, where the program's focus will be, "Police Past and Present." This program is to recognize and honor all policemen with appreciation for all they do to protect us," officials explained.
Questions being asked and educational information which convered will include, "Did you know there was a jail in Eldersville?" To which the answer is, "It was a Terracotta tile building with no windows built into the hillside in Don and Betty Bailey's yard on Scott Hollow Road." A photo of that jail was in The Record Enterprise's Sept. 20, 1995 edition, and will be given as a handout.
Questions being asked, "Do you remember Mike Robb, Smith Township Police Officer?" The reply was, "We have his picture in uniform to give as a handout. We have an article and picture that appeared in the Burgettstown Enterprise's Sept.18, 1958, issue about Robb to show you."
"Do you remember Walter Lonick, Smith Township Police Officer?" it was asked, to which the reply was, "We have his picture in uniform available as a handout."
Huggins will make it a point to inform those in attendance what is going on in law enforcement today. She will inform guests of what is happening to officers across the country and how society owes law enforcement many thanks, it was stated.
"We need to stand behind them," she said, "Please come to the meeting and learn more."
Huggins, as founder, will speak about, "Covering the Blue," and what they do. She will share how many lap blankets have been shipped to wounded officers across the country. Audience participation is encouraged and those attending are asked to share anything about police -- past and present, such as pictures or articles.
Refreshments and fellowship will take place following the meeting and those attending are encouraged to bring a guest. One does not need to be a member to attend any of the meetings.
The society will hold its annual outdoor Memorial Day service at 8:45 a.m. May 29 at its memorial site in Eldersville. Refreshments will be held at the white church following the program.
