St. Thomas plans Pentecost service

WEIRTON -- St. Thomas Episcopal Church, located at 300 Three Springs Drive, will hold a special, religious Pentecost service which includes communion, at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The service is open to the public. Eric Fithyan will be the guest organist and a reception will follow. For information, call the office at (304) 723-4120.

Community center breakfast

UNIONPORT -- The Wayne Township Community Center will hold a benefit breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the center, with proceeds going toward the upkeep of the center.

The menu will consist of pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, biscuits, scrambled eggs, toast and drinks.

Serbian picnic grounds chicken blasts

WEIRTON -- The Serbian chicken blasts held at the picnic grounds on Kings Creek Road in Weirton, are set to begin Wednesday and will continue every Wednesday through Aug. 30.

Chickens will cost $10 and may be ordered by calling (304) 748-9866 between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Orders must be picked up by 6 p.m.

Church celebrates summer season

FOLLANSBEE -- The Follansbee Nazarene Church will celebrate summer with a free sundae from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. June 3 at the church, located at 144 Mahan Lane. The community is invited to attend.

A free baseball hat bowl will be given to each child while they last, officials noted.

UMWA to hold meeting

HOPEDALE -- The United Mine Workers of America will hold a regular meeting at 10 a.m. June 3 at the Hopedale American Legion, located at 48225 Rabbit Road. Breakfast will be served beforehand at 9:30 a.m.

Preparing for Ohio River Sweep

STEUBENVILLE -- Ohio River Sweep will be held from 9 a..m. to noon June 10 at the Steubenville marina. The sweep is an award-winning cleanup consisting of volunteers removing tons of trash along the Ohio River banks. This encompasses the entire length of the river which is nearly 3,000 miles of shoreline.

The event is organized by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission. Information can be obtained by calling (740) 266-6899.

Vegetable Production Walk

SMITHFIELD -- The Jefferson and Harrison master gardener volunteers, along with the Ohio State University Extension, will hold a vegetable production walk from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 13. The event will be held at It's All Good Farm, located at 101 East Tanner St. in Smithfield.

Topics to be covered include: General management for vegetable production; integrated pest-management strategies for crops, such as pumpkins, tomatoes, peppers, beets, carrots and flowers. Considerations for growing produce in high tunnels will be discussed.

Registration is $15. Space is limited. Registration must be completed by 5 p.m. June 12 with checks made out to OSU Extension and mailed to: OSU Extension, Jefferson County, Jefferson and Harrison Master Gardener Volunteers, 500 Market Street, Suite 512, Steubenville, OH 43952.
