WEIRTON -- Throughout May and June, the Top of West Virginia Arts Council will host three artists from the Tri-State Area at the Summit Art Gallery located at 3539 Main St., Weirton.
Featured in the show will be Dean Mossor, an accomplished oil painter in the impressionist style utilizing thick, thick layers of paint. Mossor was born and raised in Weirton; however, he now resides in Steubenville. He joined the Army and worked as a newspaper cartoonist and later as a self-employed painter doing murals, trompe l'oeil, marbling and woodgraining in his civilian life, winning numerous awards.
Weirton resident Mallory Hout also will be highlighted in the show. She was born in Steubenville and has lived in the Tri-State Area for most of her life. Hout has many interests to help fulfill her life, with art serving as a major piece. A lifelong artist, she was influenced by a teacher in a community college art class who introduced her to different mediums. Hout is best known for her vivid pastels painting, but also uses other mediums. Her subjects are varied but she has an affinity for wildlife.
Rounding out the trio is lifelong Midland, Pa., resident Fritz Hartman, a multimedia artist who earned a bachelor of arts degree in communication at Robert Morris College in 1993. Through the years he has worked on a variety of surfaces including vehicles, panels, guitars, stained glass and aircraft. In the mid-1980s he painted custom guitars for Duran Duran, Dio and Leatherwolf. His art was influenced by Monet, Eyvind Earle, Mucha, Frank Frazaetta, James Bama, Shepard Fairey, JR, Andy Warhol and pop cultural art in general.
Hartman is a member of Midland Arts Council and has earned several awards for his works, including a Telly Award for a TV commercial. He earned a second-place award in the drawing category in the "City Forged by Steel" show held in Weirton a few years ago.
The opening reception for the three-artist show will be May 11 at 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public with light refreshments provided. The Tri-State Artist Trio exhibit will be on display through June 30 at the gallery, during the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parking is available behind the building.
The Top of West Virginia Arts Council is a subcommittee of the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, focused on developing arts and culture in Brooke and Hancock counties. New exhibitions open at the Summit Art Gallery every two months. Top of WV CVB represents the interests of its membership and encourages tourism, promotes the arts and increases economic activity and development to further the general welfare and prosperity of Brooke and Hancock counties. Adults: Take a look inside the publishing industry with Jacob Baugher on May 8 at 5:30 p.m. This program will offer an overview of the three primary publishing avenues -- traditional, self and hybrid -- and take writers through the process of writing an elevator pitch, synopsis and query letter. Author Gary Beckley will discuss and sign copies of his book "Oh! Susannah" on May 13 at 11 a.m. The book explores a woman's role in society during the Civil War era and centers around the author's third great-grandmother. Susannah's family traveled between Harrison and Carroll counties during her lifetime. Her brothers were recruited and became privates within the 98th OVI and were the first regiment to occupy Camp Steubenville and Camp Mingo. The book can be purchased for $36.95 at the program.
Children: Grab-and-Go Craft is available starting Monday while supplies last. Each bag will contain supplies to make a spring craft.
Play and Learn will be on May 11 at 6 p.m. and May 12 at 10:30 a.m. This is for parents with children ages birth to 4. All toys promote letter knowledge.

Three Score Seniors group scheduled to meet May 25
WEIRTON -- President Ed Powell welcomed members of the Three Score Seniors group to the April meeting held at Undo's in Weirton.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Powell, Bob Shirer gave the invocation and Mary Ellen Groves led the group in the singing of "God Bless America."
Vice President Vivian Weigel introduced Chuck Lucas, who sang and played the guitar.
Sunshine Chairman Winnie Kemp gave an update on cards sent. Birthdays were acknowledged.
Weigel, reservation chairman, noted there were 40 members in attendance.
House Chairman Cathy McCarrick used the theme of spring for the decorations.
Prizes were given by Larry Purks, Lee Edwards and Betty Virtue to Carl Bish, Linda Kennedy, Lois Cox, Ed Powell, Mary Louise Danek, Betty Virtue, Connie Gilbert, Mary Ann Tassey, Mary DiFonzo, Mary Bohach and Mary Margaret Klepadlo.
Bob Shirer gave the benediction.
The next meeting will be held on May 25.
