WEIRTON -- Jeanne Amidon, president of the Weirton Woman's Club, welcomed fellow members and guests to the start of their March dinner meeting, held at Undo's. The club, which is a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs of West Virginia, began their session with member Jane Watson giving the inspiration, the pledge and club collect.
Local author Annette Dashofy led the program for the evening. Dashofy is the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award winner for her 2022 novel, "Death by Equine." She was previously nominated for the Agatha Award for Best First Novel and for Best Contemporary novel about her newest detective series, "Where the Guilty Hide." She discussed her writing process and talked of having been on stage with famous authors and meeting author James Patterson.
Dashofy completed the program by signing books for club members. The club's April meeting took place at Undo's, with member Helen Gibson discussing Jane Cunningham Croly, the founder of the first woman's club. Croly, in defiance of being denied entry to a luncheon held in honor of famous author Charles Dickens - because she was a woman, then became an advocate for women in their fight for equality. She also wrote a column for creativity and efficiency in the home.
Announcements were made by members Gibson and Kay Kempler about having attended the Convention at the Greenbrier and returning with honor and superior awards for the club, along with a first-place ribbon for Lea Shirer's quilt.
Members were reminded to bring supplies to the next meeting for the GFWC's signature project -- domestic violence.
