Class of '59 holds meeting

STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville High School Class of '59 held its monthly meeting June 14.

Norina Eroshevich provided the blessing and condolences were sent to family of Dr. Nick Sarap who died last month.

Get well messages were offered to Barbara Maragos who has a leg injury.

The month of June was celebrated with cake, which was provided by Paul Brandt.

The next meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Froehlich's Classic Corner.

The thought for the month is, "Celebrate America's Independence Day and never lose your sparkle."

Veterans service commission to meet

STEUBENVILLE -- The regular monthly meeting of the Veterans Service Commission of Jefferson County will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting's location is 500 Market St., Suite 310. All veterans and interested parties are welcome to attend.

Veterans picnic set for July 15

SMITHFIELD -- The Jefferson County Veterans Association will hold its annual free picnic for active military, veterans and their families from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 15 at shelters 1-3 at Friendship Park in Smithfield.

The Tri-State Community Band will open the festivities with the national anthem and perform patriotic, popular music.

Attendees may tour JCVA's Military Park exhibits including a F-89 Korean War jet fighter, Vietnam observation plane, tank, Howitzer, Navy anti-aircraft battery, World War II cannon and more or sit at the Memorial Wall displaying 888 bricks with names, military branch and dates of service listed.

Names date back to the War of 1812, officials commented. An alphabetical list of names is located in the Sheriff Fred Abdalla Memorial Shelter for easy reference in locating a veteran.

Library events and activities planned

STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County will hold the following events and activities as part of the summer reading series.

Children: Mr. Puppet will entertain kids with his ventriloquist show at 10:30 a.m. July 17. Seating is limited and is first-come, first-served.

Babygarten will be at 11 a.m. July 19. Stories, songs and rhymes are shared with babies from birth to age 2, along with their caregiver.

Make a zebra craft when you visit the library at 2 p.m. July 20. This is for kids ages 7 and older. Registration is required.

Teens: Create a cat planter using upcycled materials at 2 p.m. July 18. This is for teens ages 14 and older.

Adults: Learn mocktail recipes to keep you refreshed on a warm day. This program will be at 4 p.m. July 19. Registration is required.

Get Published: Microfiction at 5:30 p.m. July 17. Learn the basic structure of microfiction and the publishing submission process. Participants will write a 100-word story, revise, edit and have the opportunity to submit it to Black Hare Press. Registration is required.

Buckeye West reunion planned

SMITHFIELD -- A Buckeye West High School reunion has been planned for 6 p.m. Aug. 12 at La Chateau Pier, located at 195 state Route 151 in Smithfield. The cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple. Payments can be sent to Buckeye West Reunion, c/o Michael Bednar, 4110 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, OH 43952.

There will be an icebreaker at 6 p.m. the evening before at LA Pizza in Adena.

This event coincides with the Adena Heritage Days so there will be many friends and classmates in the area, according to organizers.

A reunion website is being created on Facebook for those interested and needing information. The event is being hosted by Bednar.

Mingo pickleball under way

MINGO JUNCTION -- Pickleball is ready to get under way at 10 a.m. Friday at the large shelterhouse inside Aracoma Park.

Sponsored by the Mingo Junction Recreation Department, the kickoff informational meeting will include discussions, the opportunity to meet instructors who will be on hand to give directions on the sport, and free donuts and coffee provided by Schuetz Funeral Home.

Those who have a pickleball paddle and ball are asked to bring them to the meeting.

Questions will be addressed by officials in attendance.

Non-residents of Mingo Junction are invited to attend and participate in the sport, it was noted.
