STEUBENVILLE -- Motherhood can be often-times be difficult. Especially when it comes to those who are about to be new mothers. Women find themselves sometimes wondering where to go or where to turn for either assistance or support. Those in need do not have to look much further. Those at the Aim Women's Center have been serving the women of the Upper Ohio Valley for the past 35 years. Throughout the years, the pregnancy care center in Steubenville has seen many changes take place. In 2020, as COVID gripped the country, the center's activities slowed, giving leaders time to evaluate and refocus on the facility.
This year, Aim expanded its services and formed a wrap-around approach to helping new parents. The center now offers free, limited OB ultrasound and pregnancy testing. Testing for STDs, along with treatment, is being offered, as well.
Parents are supported monthly with diapers, wipes and formula. Monthly meetings known as family celebrations are held between parents and Aim representatives in order to be able to connect with one another and receive support within the community. Upon delivery, mothers are able to receive a layette containing clothes, blankets and other baby necessities. All of these services and materials are provided to mothers, free of charge. A primary service provided by the center is an ultrasound. But when equipment is outdated or not up to today's standard, it is time to make a change.
Officials stated the center's previous machine needed to be replaced but the funds just weren't there. With help from the Knights of Columbus and several local citizens, funds were donated and the center was able to purchase an updated, state-of-the-art, new machine, officials commented. The Mindray DC40 is a latest models designed for OB ultrasound. It has capabilities for both 2D and 4D images.
"We are thrilled with the community's support and deeply grateful to the Knights and Larry LaRosa for their donation," stated Dan Hawrot, board president. "We cannot say thank you enough."
