Urban Mission to hold bash Aug. 17
STEUBENVILLE -- Urban Mission Ministries will hold its annual Back-to-School Bash from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17 in the Seventh Street plaza's parking lot.
Pupils and students in grades kindergarten through 12 will have the opportunity to attend the annual event with a parent.
In turn, they will receive a backpack containing all of the basic supplies required by local school districts throughout the area.
Bookbags will contain pens, pencils, notebooks, two-pocket folders, filler paper, Elmer's glue bottle and glue sticks. Crayons, colored pencils and markers will be included. The event is free of charge and open to the community.
Urban Mission officials are asking for contributions of either monetary donations or the actual school supplies, as there is a shortage on materials such as filler paper, markers, and two-pocket folders. Those interested in donating to the nonprofit agency may do so my dropping off the gift at its Seventh Street office.
River cruise to tour new bridge
STEUBENVILLE -- The Follansbee and Jefferson County chambers of commerce have teamed up and organized a riverboat cruise, scheduled to take place Aug. 23. The deadline to register is today.
The cruise will allow passengers to view the construction taking place on the new bridge. Area residents are being asked to participate.
The Gateway Clipper has been booked for the three-hour evening cruise which will leave the Steubenville Marina and head toward the area between Wellsburg and Brilliant where the span is nearing completion.
The cost, which includes food, is $75 per person. Music will be provided by Hoard and Jones.

United Mine Workers to meet
HOPEDALE -- The United Mine Workers of America Local 1304 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hopedale American Legion, located on Rabbit Road in Hopedale.
Breakfast will be served prior to the meeting, scheduled to start around 9:30 a.m., according to officials.
Picnic will honor veterans
UNIONPORT -- The Order of the Eastern Star will hold its annual picnic from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Unionport Community Center. The picnic will honor veterans and first responders, according to Wreaths Across America coordinator Le'Ann Gibbons, secretary of the Unionport Chapter No. 360, OES.
The event will feature food, entertainment, games and fellowship.
August luncheon for Class of '59
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville High School Class of 1959 held its monthly luncheon July 12. There were 17 people in attendance. A blessing for those present and those unable to attend was provided. Best wishes were extended to Donna Collins, who is moving to Urbana.
Get-well wishes were sent to Barbara Maragos.An initial discussion to have a 65-year reunion of the class sometime next May was presented before alumni. All those in the Class of '59 will be contacted to determine if there is an interest. A birthday cake was provided by Terry Seese. Happy birthday was sung to Norina Eroshevich. The thought for the day was read, "Happiness is a choice. As best you can, be happy each day." The next meeting will take place at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Froehlich's Classic Corner. Library to show films
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will show two movies for those who would like to attend the free event. "The Super Mario Brothers Movie," which has a rating of PG, will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday. "Book Club: The Next Chapter," has a PG-13 rating and will be shown at noon Aug. 11.
Those attending are welcome to bring food, while bottled water and popcorn will be provided. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling (304) 737-1551 or by visiting the website https://brookecountylibs.org/programming-reservations.
The license to show certain movies at the library is sponsored by Friends of the Brooke County Public Libraries.
Open house at Pleasant Hill museum
STEUBENVILLE -- An open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Pleasant Hill Schoolhouse Historical Museum, located on state Route 213. Those attending the walk-through of the one-room building which used to educate area children during the 1800s, will have the opportunity to see the school materials used in those days. Anyone can attend the event, which is free of charge.
Corn Festival returns to Weirton
WEIRTON -- Christ United Methodist Church will hold its 16th-annual Corn Festival from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at the church, located at 3598 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton Heights.
This year's event will be back to "dine in" and features corn-on-the-cob, pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw and Texas sheet cake. The cost at the door will be $12 for adults, $6 for children 6-12 and free for children under 6 years of age. The event will feature auction baskets and corn will be available for purchase.
