Senior center to hold dance, Thursday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Senior Citizens Center will hold a dance from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the center, located at 3425 Main St.
There is a $5 donation to attend. Hot dogs, punch and dessert will be served. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Jack Thomas will play live music that evening. For information, contact the center at (304) 748-3490.
Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club
CHESTER -- A Tri-State hunter education safety course will be open to the public for anyone 10 years of age and older. The course is free of charge. Those wishing to enroll can sign up online at register-ed.com and select the options: "Traditional class," "West Virginia" and the the club's name.
The two-day class will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 and from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13.
A kid's fishing tournament will be held for children 3-15 years of age. The event is free and open to the public. The tournament will take place between 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the club's lake.
There will be prizes, food and drinks for the children. The club is located past Oak Glen High School, on Gas Valley Road, behind Green Valley Dairy.
Farm bureau needs fair volunteers
SMITHFIELD -- The Jefferson County Farm Bureau is looking for volunteers during the 2023 Jefferson County Fair.
The fair is being held the week of Aug. 15-20 at Friendship Park Road in Smithfield. The Farm Bureau is looking for volunteers to help with running its booth at the fair. There will be a daily theme, games and a scavenger hunt to interact with kids of all ages.
"We are looking for volunteers in two-hour time slots between the hours of 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. every day from Tuesday through Sunday," officials said. Those willing to help can e-mail the office at Jefferson@ofbf.org or call (330) 339-7211 and leave a message. Volunteers can pick up an admission ticket as a token of the bureau's appreciation from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 13 during the 4-H welcome meal at the fairgrounds. "Your help is greatly appreciated and essential to the success of the fair," those at the bureau said.
Madonna reunion weekend
WEIRTON -- Madonna High School will hold an all-class reunion weekend from Aug. 17-20. On Aug. 17, there will be a football scrimmage, with the time and place to be determined. On Aug. 18, an alumni mixer will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse. One must be 21 or older to attend and the cost is $30 per person.
On Aug. 19, the Friends of Madonna Picnic will take place between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the Serbian Picnic Grounds. There is a $5 charge for parking. The Semi-Supervillains will provide entertainment. On Aug. 20, a brunch will be held tours of the school will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon.

Autism training day coming to Weirton
WEIRTON -- The Weirton First Church of the Nazarene will host an "Autism Training Day" for the community between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Aug. 26 at the church, located at 475 Colliers Way.
This event is for the purpose of learning how to be more inclusive to those who are on the spectrum for having autism and those closest to them, such as parents, grandparents and guardians. Ben Childers, who is an autism specialist from Marshall University, will share some of his knowledge about what autism is and how to be more of a community by including those who have autism. This training day is free of any charge and is courtesy of the West Virginia Autism Training Center.
Blood donors needed
STEUBENVILLE -- After a summer of declining donations, the American Red Cross needs the public's help to prevent a blood shortage. Currently the Red Cross is in need of type O negative, type O positive and type B negative blood donors. Donors of all blood types can schedule an appointment to give by downloading the Red Cross blood donor app by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling (800) 733-2767.
The nonprofit agency is teaming up with Warner Bros. for the theatrical release of "Meg 2: The Trench" to celebrate a summer of sharks and help stave off a summer blood shortage. All who come to give through Aug. 12 will be automatically entered for a chance to win a three-night New York getaway for two with a private shark dive adventure at Long Island Aquarium. Those who come to give throughout the month of August will get a $10 e-gift card to a movie merchant of their choice. Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Movie.
A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
