Brilliant Legion to hold 9/11 ceremony
BRILLIANT -- Officials from the Brilliant American Legion Post 573 state they are honored to be joining area police and fire and rescue personnel as they pay tribute to the veterans, first responders and Americans who perished as a result of the events which unfolded Sept. 11, 2001.
The public is invited to attend the remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Liberty Corners Memorial, located by the post at 210 Market St., Brilliant.
The Brilliant volunteer fire department will raise the garrison flag on its ladder truck and the Brilliant American Legion will conduct a rifle salute.
Guest speaker will be Fire Chief Brian Harvey. Music will be performed by Ron Retzer.
Lincoln impersonator to visit library
WELLSBURG -- The Friends of Brooke County Public Libraries have arranged for actor Kevin Wood to appear as Abraham Lincoln at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Wellsburg location.
In a program titled "A New Birth of Freedom," Wood, as Lincoln, will discuss highlights of his life, from humble beginnings in America's frontier to his part during the Civil War that almost ended the nation as we know it.
Wood will draw from Lincoln's speeches and writings, while addressing attendees in character. The event is free and an hour in length. This will include time for questions and photos with Wood. He has portrayed Lincoln for 23 years, delivering programs in 32 states, Canada and Spain.
The event serves as a membership drive for the Friends, a group of volunteers who support the Wellsburg and Follansbee libraries in various ways. For information, call (304) 737-1551.
4-H to hold soup fundraiser
SMITHFIELD -- The 4-H Varieties soup fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Jefferson County Fair kitchen. Meals are $10 and kids' trays are $5. Take out will be available. More than 10 soups will be offered, along with cornbread, crackers and a drink. There will be a silent auction, bake sale, craft tables, a tattoo booth and games for children at the event.
4-H to hold Cutest Baby Contest
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County 4-H program will hold its Cutest Baby Contest during the Brooke County Fair Sept. 15-17 at Brooke Hills Park. Fair-goers may cast votes during the fair by dropping 25 cents into the slotted lid of a can at the 4-H booth bearing the child's photo. Votes can be cast up until 5 p.m. Sept. 17, when the winner will be announced.
Contestants must be registered by completing an entry form at the West Virginia University Extension office at 840 Charles St. prior to Thursday or at the 4-H booth by 7 p.m. Sept. 15. A can and $3 registration fee should be provided at that time.
Story hour set
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will offer a story hour based on "Pete the Cat Checks Out the Library," at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Open to children, ages 2-5 and their caregivers, the free program will include activities and a snack. Space is limited, so reservations should be made by calling (304) 737-1551 ext. 106.
Library to screen films
WELLSBURG -- The PG-rated, animated film, "Hotel Transylvania: Transformania," will be shown at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Brooke County Public Library and the rated PG-13 romantic drama "Love Again" will be shown at noon Sept. 15 at the Follansbee Library. Attendees are welcome to bring food. Popcorn and bottled water will be provided by the library. To register for the free screenings, call (304) 737-1551.
Library fees to be waived
WELLSBURG -- September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, and Brooke County Libraries will be celebrating in two ways.
Throughout the month, anyone who would like to replace their well-worn library cards may do so at no cost while fines for overdue items from the library will be waived.
Everyone is encouraged to stop by the Wellsburg or Follansbee locations or visit its Facebook page to learn about the wide variety of materials offered, including books, magazines, music and movies.
Democratic Women to hold meeting
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Democratic Executive Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Brooke County Library in Wellsburg .
The Brooke County Democratic Women meet immediately following the executive committee meeting. All Democrats are welcome to attend.
Sycamore Center opening second site
STEUBENVILLE -- The Sycamore Youth Center will be launching a new site at Indian Creek Middle School starting Oct. 16. The program is called ICMS Sycamore Stars After-School Program.
Classes will run after school from 2:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday starting Oct. 16. It will run until April 12. The program will be open to all Indian Creek Middle School students and fifth- through eighth-grade students at the Jefferson County Christian School.
Some of the classes available will include theater, cooking, choir, STEM Learning, math, reading, virtual reality, hip hop, chess and art.
Class times will be announced in the coming weeks, officials said.
