AEP stresses safety
STEUBENVILLE -- September may usher in the beginning of fall, but summer temperatures are lingering -- with more in the forecast for this weekend and into next week. Take steps to avoid heat-related illnesses and save energy. AEP Ohio emphasizes safety and being prepared, but special focus is being given this September in order to recognize National Preparedness Month. Senior center to hold dance
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Senior Citizens Center will hold its dance from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the center. The cost is a $5 donation. Hot dogs, punch and dessert will be provided. Guests are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Jack Thomas will be singing throughout the evening. For information, call (304) 748-3490.
Class of 1970 to meet
WEIRTON -- The Weir High Class of 1970 will have its next dinner meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Route 22 Sports Bar. All classmates and their guests are invited to attend.
Legion to hold flea market
WEIRTON -- Weirton American Legion Post 10, will hold a flea market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 9 at the post, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave. in Weirton. Approximately 20 tables will be in use, with items including something for everyone, according to organizers. Several items will be available, including baked goods, vintage items and toys. The community is invited to attend.
Church offers food and clothing
WEIRTON -- Evangel Baptist Church, located at 204 Old Colliers Way in Weirton, offers a monthly food and clothing pantry distribution for those in need. The church's next distribution will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 10. The pantry is available to all residents of Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania in need. Societies join forces
STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society and the Smithfield Historical Society will meet for a joint event at 1 p.m. Sept. 24. The event is open to the public. Reservations are due by Sept. 12. Lunch will be served at Le Chateau Pier in Smithfield and reservations can be made with Linda Kovach at (740) 346-6043. The cost is $25 per person and includes lunch and gratuity.
Le Chateau Pier, located at 195 state Route 151, will serve lunch, after which officers of both organizations will present information about the groups. They will discuss to attendees how to become a member or volunteer, as well. Owners of Le Chateau, Todd and Tina Piergallini, will speak about the historical property, which in the past was a private home, nursing home and a Catholic prayer center. It is now a bed and breakfast and venue center catering to large events.
A tour of the Smithfield Historical Society Museum will conclude the joint event. The museum is a short drive from Le Chateau Pier, organizers noted.
BPW meeting change
STEUBENVILLE -- The first meeting of the Business Professional Women's Club will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Main Library, located at 407 S. Fourth St. This session is in place of the Sept. 19 meeting.
PERI meeting discusses issues
STEUBENVILLE -- During a recent PERI meeting, Jim Range, District 9 PERI representative, discussed a letter the chapter received from Bill Johnson, R-Marietta. Johnson had written the group, thanking them for its support of HR 82, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023.
Range explained HR 82 now has the approval of more than 280 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, adding there are currently more than 37,000 state-wide members of PERI. He noted PERI's annual meeting will be held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Columbus Sept. 18 at the cost of $35 per person. PERI membership is now open to spouses of OPERS pension recipients, officials learned. Linda Wells was the 50/50 winner. The next meeting will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Froehlich's Classic Corner in the Fiesta Room. Guest speaker will be Judy Owings from Our Place senior center.
Alumni association talks donations
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Oak Glen Alumni Association purchased a new sign at the north end of New Cumberland. The sign features Oak Glen High School and directs people to the correct road to find the Oak Glen campus.
Officials thanked Campbell's Signs for the design and installation. The Oak Glen Alumni Association is collecting donations for the annual Light-Up the Bear's Den project, with its goal being to raise $1,000. The money will be used for the Oak Glen science department and its equipment and special programming. Donations can be sent to Light Up Bear's Den at Oak Glen High School.
