Weirton center to hold dance
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Community Center will hold its Halloween dance from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 5. Organizers stated Jack Thomas will be playing music that evening. Guests are asked to bring a covered dish to share. The cost is $5 for admission. There will be a bake sale, rummage sale and book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the center.
Tri-State Marine Corps meets
WEIRTON -- Members of the Tri-State Marine Corps Club met Sept. 11.
President Shirley Brecht opened the meeting, followed by Chaplain Mary Ann Smith saying a prayer.
Secretary Marcy Spano informed members in attendance of those who are on a prayer list, adding that sympathy cards have been sent to the families of those club members.
The reciting of the pledge to the flag was led by Brecht.
Spano then provided minutes of the August meeting, which were approved.
The treasurer's report was given by Brecht, with members unanimously approving it as read.
Club members in attendance brought to the floor to hold a Christmas party, with the motion passing.
The luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 4 at Giovanni's Restaurant.
Those with birthdays in September were recognized, including Brecht.
The evening entailed a social hour with sloppy joes, coleslaw and ambrosia served.
The meeting was adjourned following the announcement that the next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at the VFW hall in Weirton.
Hancock museum commission meets
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The regular meeting of the Hancock County Museum Commission was called to order Sept. 6 by President Vivian Weigel who led in the pledge to the flag. Those attending included Weigel, Marcus Trelaine, Alice Mitchell, Kathy Beagle, John Speerhas and Doris Cameron.
Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as mailed.
Treasurer Trelaine presented the financial statement, which was placed on file for audit. He reported all corrected back tax statements were filed and up-to-date.
Weigel recommended the commission submit the names of Beagle and Speerhas to the county commissioners to be installed as commissioners on the Hancock County Museum Commission. Members unanimously accepted.
During a recent storm, a large tree branch was struck down from the museum's backyard area, members noted.
A lawn service maintenance worker said he would clean it up and haul it away for $300. Membership agreed to pay the extra fees.
Janet Keller sent word she has two items for the museum and wants to participate in the assembly of a basket for the Riverfest.
The gift of a vintage doll from Holly Janeart and a gift of 10 New Cumberland High School graduation programs from 1936-44 was received from Sharri Brown of Gold River, Calif. The commission's secretary will send proper acknowledgements. Everyone available was asked to help set up for Riverfest.
They were asked to sign up for a work shift of either 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday or noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Summer lectures series' dates are in conflict, and therefore, plans will be announced at a later date, members noted.
The next meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the museum.
