The Sonya McLoyd Educational Scholarship was awarded to two area students on July 16 at the Calvary Community Missionary Baptist Church. The $1,000 award was presented by the Rev. Calvin and Vivian McLoyd and Chairperson Patricia Fletcher. Scholarships were given to Bryce Huff, second from right, who will be attending Baldwin Wallace University. He will be majoring in sports management, according to organizers. Synnamon Montgomery was awarded the Sonya McLoyd Educational Scholarship as well. Montgomery is planning to attend the University of Dayton. She will be majoring in communications and journalism. Scholarship officials were on hand to present the scholarships to the recent graduates. Anna Knight, a past winner the church has followed throughout the program, was in attendance for the presentations. Knight now has her master's degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville. The program has given out more than $8,000 since it was introduced in 2019, according to officials, who stated, "It is a privilege and honor to keep Sonya's legacy alive, by honoring young people to further their education."
