WELLSBURG -- A Brooke High School student has applied her artistic skills to restore a familiar feature at the Betty Carr Recreation Site.

For her senior community service project, Hannah Ferguson, daughter of Todd and Lisa Ferguson, chose to restore the head of Mickey Mouse atop the park's sliding board.

It and other playground equipment were removed due to being in poor condition, and city officials planned to install new equipment at the site.

Ferguson said the cartoon mouse's countenance has been part of the park since 1976.

She received many comments from park visitors as they observed her go about the summer project.

"I repainted, painted and restored the Mickey Mouse and added a pole at the park near the original location, so the Mickey Mouse is back home," she said.

She expressed her thanks for the support of city officials, including Councilmen Tom Gaudio and Fred Marino; the Wellsburg Lions Club, her grandfather, Rich Ferguson; her Uncle Cory Ferguson; Scott Gallagher and the Parr family.

"They helped in various ways, such as monetary donations, supplies, services and labor," she said.

Ferguson conducted small cleanups at the park, as well, saying, "I wanted to give back to my hometown and do something nice. I also love art and felt this was a way to bring some nostalgia."
