Auxiliary to hold book sale
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Medical Center Auxiliary will hold a "Books Are Fun Gifts" sale from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. The sale will be held in the medical center's atrium, located on Colliers Way.
The auxiliary has a new line of merchandise inside its gift shop and the public is encouraged to visit the shop inside the center to see the various items being offered.
Public invited to drug program
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke-Hancock Family Resource Network will present a public program on issues related to drug abuse at 6 p.m. Monday at Brooke High School.
The program is in conjunction with talks to students at the middle and high schools in observance of National Red Ribbon Week, a nationwide drug prevention observance spurred by the death of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a federal drug enforcement agent who was killed by cocaine traffickers in 1985.
Tapped to speak to students and adults are: U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld, members of the Northern Panhandle Drug Task Force, a federal drug agent and a criminal analyst from Charleston.
The programs will include a demonstration by a K-9 unit and discussion of such issues as laced vapes, drugs disguised as candy and minors used to distribute narcotics, among others.
Libraries to close early
The Brooke County Public Library in Wellsburg will close at 4 p.m. Tuesday and the Follansbee Library will close at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday for staff training.
Evening story hour set
WELLSBURG -- Kim Harless will lead an evening story hour based on "The Little Ghost Who Lost Her Boo," at 5 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Brooke County Public Library.

Chamber to hold Trunk-or-Treat
FOLLANSBEE -- The Follansbee Chamber of Commerce will hold Trunk-or-Treat from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 26 outside the Follansbee Community House.
Various local businesses and organizations will be manning stations with treats.
Smithfield sets Trick-or-Treat hours
SMITHFIELD -- Trunk-or-Treat will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Smithfield police and fire station parking lots.
Smithfield's community Trick-or-Treat will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 28.
Holiday food sale underway
WEIRTON -- The St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is selling frozen cabbage rolls and cheese and potato pierogies through Nov. 10. The cost for six cabbage rolls is $20 and a dozen pierogies is $12.
Orders can be placed by calling (304) 479-0196. Pickup will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 16 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Hall, located at 604 Colliers Way, across from Weirton Medical Center.
Recipe club to meet
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library's adults-only Cook by the Book Recipe Club will meet at noon Oct. 27.
Every month, the club works with a theme. Those participating choose a recipe, make it and bring into the library with a copy of the recipe.
Club members then share the finished product, swap recipes and engage in fellowship.
This month they will be sharing warm and cozy fall recipes. Registration is not required. For information, call (304) 737-1551.
Halloween polka dance
BARTON -- The Barton volunteer fire department will sponsor a Halloween polka dance from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Homestead Event Center, located at 62325 Buena Vista Drive in St. Clairsville.
Music by "The Boys" from Maryland will provide the entertainment, organizers stated. This will be the final performance in Ohio, as the band will retire after 40 years together.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and admission is $15. Children 18 and under are free of charge, There will be a cash bar, food concession, drawings, a 50/50 drawing, a $500 meat gift card and prizes for best costume.

Church to hold sports card show
WELLSBURG -- Wellsburg Church of the Nazarene, located at 835 Washington Pike, will hold a sports card and memorabilia trade show from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 28.
Wheeling Nailers' mascot, Spike, will make an appearance.
Admission is $5. Proceeds go to the church's youth group.
Catholic Women hold Christmas sale
HOPEDALE -- The 22nd-annual CWC used Christmas items sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 3 and Nov. 10; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 and Nov. 11.
