WINTERSVILLE -- The Wintersville Woman's Club returned to meeting at the St. Florian Event Center Sept. 21 since wrapping up business last spring.
President Iris Craig led the 25 members and four guests in attendance in the first program of the year, entitled, "Balance in Your Life."
Member Cheryl Taylor led the club in various exercises to increase arm strength and maintain balance. Following Taylor's demonstration, she provided the meditation and grace.
The year's first meeting included guests Yvonne Ford, GFWC Ohio president, and Esther Gartland, first vice president. The ladies gave brief remarks prior to the business meeting, which opened with pledge of allegiance and the club collect. Michalene King called roll, doing so with a unique structure: When calling out a name, she then asked them the question, "What is your favorite fall activity?"
Answers included attending fall festivals, decorating for autumn, carving pumpkins, eating pumpkin pie or pumpkin ice cream, watching football, cooler weather and changing leaves.
The minutes of the May 18 meeting were approved. Treasury reports were given by Treasurer Karen Hill. A copy of the budget was distributed to all members and approved.
Corresponding Secretary Aimee Jaros announced she took care of correspondence for August and September, including birthday, sympathy and get-well cards.
Jaros then read a thank you letter the club received from DCI, expressing appreciation for the club's donation of blankets. The thank you addressed the Shots for Life program which supplies childhood immunizations, as members assisted with that cause, as well.
Under committee reports, member Judy Weaver reported on education and libraries. She stated a new name has been given to the club of the teacher they will be helping this year. The club will give her a monetary donation to use for supplies.
Claudia Dorich gave an environmental report, which consisted of informing attendees the group is continuing in its efforts to collect used tennis shoes. The shoes must be in pair form, it was noted.
Dorich commented the flower bed in front of the Wintersville Post Office has been updated to include fall flowers. A paper drive to benefit area food banks is ongoing. Special containers have been installed behind WesBanco at the Fort Steuben Mall, with the JB Green Team having conducted a hazardous materials drop-off in Belmont County at the end of September. A clothes drop-off was held at Indian Creek High School for the Urban Mission Ministries. The drive was held Sept. 25-29, Dorich stated.
Barb Grimm reported on health and wellness, saying the canned goods that were used to practice exercises during the September meeting will be donated to a local food bank.
Hill explained what the brochures on the luncheon's tables were for, saying it is an upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness and Community Expo sponsored by the Women in Action Against Cancer Coalition. The event is scheduled to he held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Fort Steuben Mall.
Mary Beth Allan discussed membership, encouraging the club to bring guests to meetings.
She reminded members to bring Smith Oil receipts and reported on the money received for the project.
Allan distributed certificates to two members for their years of membership.
Parliamentary Adviser Marjean Sizemore reported the bylaws committee is still working on matters and plans to have the bylaws ready at a later date.
Craig's report noted the board will discuss whether to have one or two vice presidents.
Should a second be needed, nominations will take place during the October meeting and information will run in the October newsletter.
She explained food donations for local pantries were collected at the Wintersville Methodist Church for the National Day of Service.
Craig explained Gold Star Mother's Day was set for Sept. 24, and the fall conference Zoom meeting is slated for Oct. 14.
