Steubenville Art Association’s Koch to hold workshop

WEIRTON -- Bill Koch, president of the Tuscarawas County Art Guild in New Philadelphia and Steubenville Art Association member, will be presenting a workshop entitled, "Representational and Contemporary Abstracted Painting Techniques."

The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Summit Gallery in Weirton.

The cost to take part in the course is $40 and all artists are invited to attend. Fees can be paid at the door.

Contemporary art includes art from 1960 to modern day, according to Koch, who explained it is art that tells a story of today's societies and the reactions to modern-day events.

"It brings a response that is simplified and is driven by line, shape and color," Koch commented. "It is motivated by the surroundings we live in. Telling a story involves an emotional connection to the work being created. You will be using textures in a variety of techniques and abstract mark-making to do representational objects and use composition effectively -- how shapes combine in unique ways to create variety in an effective painting."

Koch's instruction will be beneficial to all artists of any medium. He noted it is not about the subject, but rather, what one feels, sees and experiences in life that makes the artist.

"The elements and principles of design are essential in creating great works of art will be our guide," Koch concluded.
