Trunk-or-Treat for special needs children set

By Staff reports 2 min read

STEUBENVLLE -- Special needs children will be entertained during the upcoming Halloween holiday, as a trunk-or-treat event is scheduled to take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Jeffco Workshop, located at 256 John Scott Highway.

Adults will enjoy some frightfully good fun as well, during the second-annual trunk-or-treat festivities. Hosted by Special Connections, the celebration will held outdoors.

The afternoon will feature games, a photo booth, food and inside activities.

The event is open to people with all abilities, according to officials.

Cooperation among the Special Needs Parent Support Group in the Ohio Valley Facebook page, Crossroads Christian Church and the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities, has made the celebration possible.

Organizers said they would love to have the event be as well-attended -- if not moreso, than last year's gathering.

"Everybody is invited to dress up and it's an inclusive event," said representative Mindy Aleksiejczyk. "It's for all ages and anyone can attend.

All of the events are organized with individuals with disabilities in mind."

The inaugural event drew between 100-125 people and officials are hoping for another great turnout.

"That was probably our biggest event last year," Aleksiejczyk commented. "It was amazing."

Special Connections was formed to provide fun activities for special needs individuals and their families, as well as to provide helpful resources.

A calendar of events was held throughout the year. Some of the highlights included a Thanksgiving dinner for Shaffer Plaza residents, Breakfast with Santa and a special Summer Bash at the Crossroads Ministry Center in Richmond.

"In addition to those events, we have informational activities by partnering with Arc of Ohio," Aleksiejczyk added.

"Caretakers can get information about topics and children have a peer hangout during meetings."
