Edison board hears from student representative

By JULIE STENGER 3 min read

HAMMONDSVILLE -- Fifth-grade pupil Jaxon Sciance sat alongside the Edison Local Board of Education during the Oct. 25 meeting at Stanton Elementary School. He is one of seven student representatives selected from a pool of applicants to serve a one-year term with the board and the second pupil to express his thoughts about the school system with board members.

Sciance informed those in attendance he discussed with other pupils' their thoughts on what is working well within the district and what needs to be improved upon.

He spoke on the topics of transportation, nutrition, classrooms and drills.

"The students like that there are different choices each day, that peanut butter and jelly is a daily choice, they get to choose which fruits and vegetables they want to eat and that there is ice cream every Tuesday and Friday," he said of the positive aspects of nutrition.

"Areas that need improvement are the students would like to have actual taco meat on their tacos, have warm food and have more jelly on their sandwiches," he added.

When the board's president, Aaron Richardson, asked Sciance what kind of meat is used in the tacos, Sciance responded, "chicken."

Richardson said he had not heard of chicken being used in the tacos and would check into the matter to see about getting some "real taco meat" for the students.

Other comments made by the student representative included the classrooms and buildings having a "praise game" reward system for meeting expectations. However, those students who need continued explanations to model appropriate expectations for the classroom, was noted by Sciance as something which needed to be improved on.

"When it comes to the curriculum, the students would like to have more hands-on activities, more pencil and paper work and more partner work," Sciance concluded. The board members were surprised to hear the children wanted more pencil and paper work, as they believed computer work was what is preferred.

It was conveyed that the matters Sciance spoke about would be looked into. The board thanked Sciance for taking the time to ask questions of other students and noted their appreciation for speaking about what is working and what needs to be improved on.
