Gearing up for the Valley’s Got Talent competition

By Staff reports 3 min read

STEUBENVILLE -- The Valley's Got Talent Competition is returning the Ohio Valley, with $1,250 in prize money to be awarded at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Steubenville High School auditorium.

More than 850 people were in attendance last year, organizers commented, saying a larger crowd is expected this year. Former VGT winners will perform at the event, including Ashley Marina, who appeared on the television show, "America's Got Talent."

The ages for those wanting to try out are 13-23. Those older than 23 are permitted to accompany or back the vocalists and musicians, but only the vocalist or musician who is between 13 and 23 will be judged, officials exclaimed.

Contestants must live within 35 miles of Steubenville. The categories are, bands, vocal groups and choirs; dance; vocal soloists; miscellaneous, non-vocal talent, including poets and instrumentalists; and dance groups. Songs must have a Christian or inspirational content.

"Since this is a competition sponsored by the Ohio Valley Youth Network, which has the goal of uplifting the hearts and minds of our youth as they use their gifts to reflect God's creative gifts in their lives, we ask that you please submit the lyrics to your song along with your entry," stated Organizer Bobbyjon Bauman.

The screening committee is composed of Ohio Valley Youth Network members who will have the final say on what is appropriate for the competition.

Those who cannot make it to the live, in-person tryouts, are free to submit an online audition. Songs must be submitted through YouTube, e-mail link or video link that can be accessed on the internet by 11:59 p.m. Saturday. The song or performance must be five minutes or less. Contestants and acts chosen to perform, will be informed on or before 11:59 p.m. Sunday by text or email.

Typically, only 20 acts will be chosen to perform at the "Valley's Got Talent" Night. The event will be carried on Facebook Live, as well as on Comcast Cable TV on the Steubenville City School's Channel 15, on delay.

"This promises to be one of the most watched VGT Competitions ever," Bauman announced.

The judging criteria includes spiritual and inspirational effectiveness, vocal and instrumental excellence, along with presentation and an ability to engage and connect with the audience.

Prizes are as follows: $500, grand-prize winner; $100, first place in each category; and $25, second place in each category.

Questions can be addressed by contacting Bobbyjon Bauman at (740) 409-2986.
